Chapter 65 - The Starlight Mortgage

The vortex beneath the Sixth Sector did not feel like wind or water. It felt like falling through a endless chute of shredded contracts.

Paper—thick, parchment-like sheets stamped with red ink, golden seals, and mortal thumbprints—raced past the hull of the ghost ship in a deafening, dry roar. Each sheet was a human life, a debt, a mortgage on a soul that had failed to pay its celestial yield.

The ship plunged straight down into the Seventh Layer: The House of Mortgaged Light.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[Entering Layer: The Seventh Maritime House — The House of Mortgaged Light]

[Conceptual Rule: High-Yield Devotion. Faith is non-transferable unless collateralized.]

[Environment Effect: Saintly Suppression. Un-registered holy magic is taxed at 500% interest per second.]

[Current Lifespan: 40 Days, 21 Hours, 04 Minutes.]

The moment the notification faded, Seraphina let out a muffled, strangled gasp.

She dropped to her knees on the quarterdeck, her forehead slamming against the dark iron wood. The faint silver luminescence that usually hovered around her skin—the primordial starlight she used to anchor Kaelen's shattering ribs—suddenly turned a violent, scorching orange. It looked like her own magic was catching fire on her skin.

"Seraphina!" Kaelen turned, leaning heavily on his split rowan cane, his boots scraping across the paper-littered deck.

"Don't... touch me..." she squeezed out through ground teeth. Smoke—smelling of burnt incense and ozone—wreathed her shoulders. "The sector... it's reading my core. It says... my devotion to you is an 'Unlicensed Investment'."

"Suppress it," Kaelen commanded, reaching down to grab her shoulder, ignoring the blistering heat of her burning aura. "Don't channel a single thread of starlight. The Seventh House is built on the commercialization of faith. If you radiate holy energy without paying a temple fee, the local clearinghouse will burn your soul to cover the tax."

"I can't... suppress it..." Seraphina raised her head. Tears of pure silver light spilled from her eyes, burning faint, smoking tracks down her pale cheeks. Her expression wasn't one of pain—it was an unhinged, terrified agony born of helplessness. "If I turn it off... who holds your heart together, Kaelen? Look at your chest!"

Kaelen looked down.

Without Alaric's glitched static to absorb the system's background friction, and without Seraphina's constant starlight scaffold, Kaelen's eighteen-year-old body was failing at a visible rate. Beneath his dark vest, his ribs were creaking under the atmospheric pressure of the Seventh House. The violet-black ink of his deficit had spread past his collarbones, crawling up the right side of his neck like dark, branching frost, almost touching his jawline.

He looked like a corpse being dragged forward by pure spite.

"I don't need a scaffold," Kaelen said, his voice terrifyingly steady despite the faint tremor in his hands. "I need you functional."

Before Seraphina could answer, the ship broke through the cloud of paper contracts and leveled out.

The ocean below them was blinding.

It wasn't made of brass or water. It was a vast, shimmering expanse of liquid silver light—pure, distilled mortal prayers, collected across ten thousand worlds and stored in immense, floating reservoir tanks. Looming over the silver sea were vast, cathedral-like structures made of white marble and glass, anchored to the ocean floor by massive iron chains as thick as mountain ranges.

This was the financial heart of the Syndicate's religious empire. The place where prayers were packaged, bundled into high-yield bonds, and sold to the deities of the Higher Heavens.

And standing on the central bridge connecting two colossal floating cathedrals was a line of seven figures.

They wore spotless white suit coats over heavy gold-and-crimson chasubles. Each of them held an ivory shepherd's crook tipped with a glowing, holographic ticker screen.

[TARGET ACQUIRED: The Seven Arch-Auditors of the Seventh House]

[Lead Representative: Arch-Auditor Malachai (High Priest of Risk Management)]

[Authority: Executive Suite Commission]

"Directory Kaelen," Arch-Auditor Malachai spoke. His voice was melodic, soft, and terrifyingly rich—like an opera singer backed by the choir of a thousand falling worlds. "You arrive with a broken ship, a erased knight, and forty days of life."

Malachai took a step forward, his ivory crook tapping the marble bridge. A wave of liquid silver light erupted from the ocean, splashing over the ghost ship's bow.

Where the silver light touched the ship, the wood didn't break—it was sanctified. The dark, terrifying iron hull was instantly bleached into a sterile, pristine white, and the dark sails turned to gossamer silk.

"You have spent your lifetimes playing the rogue trader, Kaelen," Malachai said, smiling with immaculate, blindingly white teeth. "But you forget... the Syndicate owns the sanctuary too. Your Saintess is already mortgaged."

Seraphina let out a sharp, ragged scream as her body was forcefully lifted off the deck by invisible, glowing silver threads.

[CRITICAL ALERT]

[Asset Seizure Notice: 'Saintess Vessel Seraphina']

[Reason: Unpaid Spiritual Interest on Primordial Starlight]

[Claimant: The Executive Suite (Lord Lucian)]

"No!" Seraphina clawed at the glowing threads wrapped around her throat and wrists. "I am not his asset! I am Kaelen's! I am Kaelen's!"

"You were born under the Third Heaven's jurisdiction, child," Malachai said gently, as if explaining a simple math problem to an infant. "Every breath of starlight you ever drew was loaned to your temple by Lord Lucian's personal treasury. You are simply... defaulted collateral returning to its owner."

The silver threads began pulling Seraphina toward the marble cathedral bridge—toward the Arch-Auditors.

Kaelen stood alone on the white deck of his newly sanctified ship. He watched Seraphina fight against the threads, her long white hair whipping in the wind, her eyes locked on his in absolute, hysterical terror. She wasn't afraid of dying. She was terrified of being taken from his side—leaving him with no one to hold his breaking ribs.

Forty days.

Kaelen took a deep breath. He didn't raise his cane. He didn't cast a short-sale spell.

He slowly reached up to his neck, grabbing the edge of his collar, and tore his black coat open.

The Arch-Auditors' smiles faltered for a split second.

Exposed to the blinding silver light of the Seventh House was Kaelen's bare chest. His skin was pale, paper-thin, and completely covered in a chaotic, terrifying map of pulsing, violet-black ink veins. But right over his heart, embedded deep in his flesh, was a tiny, glowing golden stamp—a seal he had carried secretly through four regressions.

The private ledger seal of Lord Lucian's personal holding company.

"You want to talk about mortgages, Malachai?" Kaelen's voice echoed across the silver sea, cold, jagged, and filled with dark, mathematical venom. "You think Seraphina is Lucian's collateral?"

Kaelen pointed his split rowan cane directly at his own heart.

"My core isn't just in debt," Kaelen whispered, his amber eyes flashing with a terrifying, unholy light. "My core is the underlying security for Lucian's entire Seventh House portfolio. If my heart stops before I reach the Third Heaven... the entire House of Mortgaged Light goes into systemic default."

Malachai's face went completely bloodless.

"You... you crazy bastard..." Malachai rasped, his polished opera-singer voice shattering. "You collateralized your own death?!"

"Try taking her," Kaelen growled, taking a step toward the edge of the bow. "And I'll terminate my own account right here."
