His shoulders slumped slightly.
The restless energy that had driven him earlier seemed diminished. "When I brought you here," he began quietly, "both of you were unconscious."
Dakota listened without interruption.
"I carried Takoda into the room next to yours." As he spoke, his gaze drifted toward the far wall, as though he could still see the room beyond it.
"I wanted everything ready before you woke up."
Dakota immediately disliked the statement. Everything ready.
The words sounded unsettlingly intimate, as though he had been preparing a life rather than a prison.
She chose not to comment.
"What happened next?"
Dorian swallowed.
"I checked the wards."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"The wards?"
"The barriers protecting the house."
That explanation immediately brought back the memory of his failed attempt to touch her.
