I bit down on my lower lip. She had a point. Parker was gone, and Ashton was bound by the promise he made him. If something happened to Rebecca, Ashton would step in regardless of how either of us felt about it. That was simply the kind of man he was — bound by his word even when it cost him.
I looked at her steadily. "Rebecca, if you're willing to spend your life this way, I won't lose sleep over it. He comes home to me every night. You know he doesn't love you the way a man loves a woman. And yet you're prepared to wait forever, without even the dignity of being claimed. You're not his, not in any real sense. So why should I be threatened by you?"
