Author Pov:
Saturday.
8:00 AM.
Ci-N stood in front of a whiteboard.
Nobody knew where he got the whiteboard.
Nobody wanted to know.
Around him sat Felix, Drew, David, Rory, Calix, Maya, Jennie, and several other classmates of Section E.
Jennie: Why am I here?
Ci-N: Attendance was required.
Jennie: Since when?
Ci-N: Since now.
He turned dramatically toward the board.
Written across the top were three words.
OPERATION DATE INVESTIGATION
The room exploded.
Felix: NO WAY.
Drew: IT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING.
David: THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.
Jennie: I want to leave.
Ci-N: Denied.
He tapped the board with a marker.
Ci-N: Last night I overheard critical information.
Maya: That's a creepy way to start a sentence.
Ci-N: Jay and Keifer are going on a date today.
The room erupted.
Felix: WHAT?!
Drew: THEY ACTUALLY ARE?!
Rory: OH THIS IS GOING TO BE FUNNY.
Jennie: Or—and hear me out—we leave them alone.
The room went silent.
Everyone stared at her.
Ci-N slowly turned.
Ci-N: Says the person who investigated them on their first date.
Jennie: That was different.
Felix: It was literally the exact same thing.
Drew: You made a spreadsheet.
David: A color-coded spreadsheet.
Rory: It had timestamps.
Jennie immediately pointed at all of them.
Jennie: I was gathering information.
Ci-N: That's called investigating.
Jennie: No, it isn't.
Ci-N: Then what do you call secretly following people around and documenting everything?
Jennie opened her mouth.
Paused.
Closed it.
Jennie: ...Research.
The room exploded with laughter.
Maya: You're never winning this argument.
Jennie dropped her face into her hands.
Jennie: I hate this class.
Ci-N: Anyway.
He dramatically turned back to the board.
Ci-N: Operation Date Investigation is officially underway.
Calix: What's the plan?
Ci-N grinned.
A dangerous grin.
The kind that usually resulted in property damage.
Or detention.
Sometimes both.
Ci-N: We locate the suspects.
Felix: Then?
Ci-N: We observe.
Drew: Then?
Ci-N: We make fun of them later.
David: Perfect.
Jennie: This is insane.
Ci-N: Thank you.
Jennie: It wasn't a compliment.
Ci-N: I know.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Jay was peacefully eating breakfast.
Completely unaware that half her class had formed an investigation team.
Keifer was also unaware.
Which was impressive.
Because Ci-N had somehow acquired a whiteboard.
That alone should have triggered alarms.
Jay checked her phone.
A message from Keifer.
Keifer: Ready?
Jay: Unfortunately.
Keifer: That's not very romantic.
Jay: Neither is waking up early on a Saturday.
Keifer: Fair.
Jay smiled despite herself.
Then grabbed her jacket.
Back at Investigation Headquarters—
Which was actually just a park—
Ci-N was assigning roles.
Ci-N: Felix, surveillance.
Felix: Nice.
Ci-N: Drew, support.
Drew: What does support do?
Ci-N: I don't know.
Drew: Excellent.
Ci-N: David, documentation.
David immediately lifted his phone.
David: Already started.
Ci-N: Calix—
Calix: Snacks?
Ci-N: Snacks.
Calix: Finally a job I'm qualified for.
Maya: Why am I still here?
Ci-N: Moral support.
Maya: I don't support this.
Ci-N: Emotional support then.
Maya: I don't support that either.
About an hour later...
The investigation was underway.
And somehow—
Against all logic—
They actually found Jay and Keifer.
The group immediately scattered behind various objects.
A bench.
A newspaper stand.
A vending machine.
A tree.
The tree was mostly Ci-N.
Who was somehow sticking out from both sides.
Felix: You're visible.
Ci-N: Am not.
Drew: You absolutely are.
Across the street, Jay and Keifer continued walking.
Completely unaware.
For now.
David: This is incredible.
Rory: They're literally just walking.
David: Exactly.
Rory: How is that interesting?
David: I don't know but it feels important.
A few minutes later—
Jay suddenly stopped.
The entire investigation team froze.
Ci-N: Why did she stop?
Felix: Did she see us?
Drew: Nobody move.
Unfortunately, Ci-N immediately moved.
Maya: You're moving.
Ci-N: Quiet.
Across the street, Jay glanced around.
Then continued walking.
The investigators collectively sighed in relief.
Ci-N: That was close.
Jennie: Maybe this is a sign.
Ci-N: A sign of what?
Jennie: That we should leave.
Ci-N: Absolutely not.
Felix: We've come too far.
Drew: We literally started this three hours ago.
Felix: Exactly.
Meanwhile...
Jay suddenly looked at Keifer.
Jay: Do you feel like something weird is happening?
Keifer thought for a moment.
Keifer: With our class?
Jay: Good point.
Keifer: Weird is normal.
Jay laughed.
And somewhere behind a newspaper stand—
Half of Section E nearly got caught trying to listen.
Operation Date Investigation was proving to be a massive success.
At least according to Ci-N.
Everyone else was still debating that.
