Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18

CHAPTER 18, THE PRESENCE THAT WATCHES

The training room felt different now.

Not because the markings had changed—

But because Jay had.

He stood in the center, shoulders relaxed, breathing steady, eyes focused. The earlier tension that once made his body stiff was gone.

In its place—

Control.

Not perfect.

Not complete.

But real.

Mr. Arvind watched him silently from a few steps away.

"You didn't collapse," he said.

Jay let out a slow breath.

"Barely."

"That's still progress."

A short pause.

"But don't get comfortable."

Jay looked up.

"I wasn't planning to."

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then—

Arvind raised his hand again.

"This time… we go deeper."

Jay's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Deeper?"

Arvind nodded.

"You've learned to endure the pressure."

A pause.

"Now… you'll act within it."

Jay's chest tightened slightly.

That sounded harder.

Much harder.

The markings on the walls began to glow faintly again.

This time—

Faster.

Stronger.

The air in the room shifted almost immediately.

Jay felt it press against him.

Not crushing—

But resisting.

Like the space itself was pushing back against his existence.

"…Again," Arvind said calmly.

"Hold your ground."

Jay closed his eyes.

Took a slow breath.

Then another.

The pressure built.

Steadily.

But this time—

He didn't just stand there.

He focused inward.

Inside—

The darkness appeared again.

But it wasn't unfamiliar anymore.

It felt… known.

Jay stood there.

And without hesitation—

He spoke.

"Come out."

The shadow appeared instantly.

Closer than ever before.

"You call again," it said.

Jay didn't waste time.

"I need your strength."

A pause.

"But not your control."

The shadow's presence shifted slightly.

"Then take it."

Outside—

Jay's eyes snapped open.

Red light flickered within them—

But this time—

It didn't spread wildly.

It stayed contained.

Like a flame inside glass.

The pressure in the room increased.

Jay's body tensed.

But he didn't step back.

Instead—

He raised his hand.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if testing something new.

The air resisted.

Pushed back.

But Jay pushed forward.

For the first time—

He wasn't just enduring the pressure.

He was moving through it.

Mr. Arvind's eyes sharpened.

"…Good."

Jay took another step.

Then another.

Each movement heavier than the last.

Each step a battle.

But he didn't stop.

Didn't lose focus.

Inside—

The shadow watched silently.

Not interfering.

Not forcing.

Just observing.

Because this time—

Jay wasn't being controlled.

He was choosing.

Jay clenched his fist.

The red glow intensified slightly.

But it didn't explode.

It stayed steady.

The pressure peaked.

The room vibrated faintly.

The markings glowed brighter.

And then—

Jay pushed forward one last time.

CRACK.

A faint sound echoed.

Like something invisible had fractured.

The pressure dropped—

Not completely—

But enough.

Jay staggered slightly.

Then caught himself.

Breathing heavier now.

But still standing.

Silence filled the room.

Mr. Arvind slowly lowered his hand.

The markings dimmed.

The pressure faded away.

"…You broke through it," he said.

Jay looked at his hand.

"…Not fully."

"No," Arvind agreed.

"But enough."

Jay exhaled deeply.

His body felt exhausted.

But different.

Stronger.

More stable.

"…That felt different," Jay said.

Arvind nodded.

"Because this time… you didn't just survive it."

A pause.

"You challenged it."

Jay remained quiet.

Processing.

Understanding.

But then—

A slight frown appeared on his face.

"…Something felt off."

Arvind's gaze sharpened.

"What do you mean?"

Jay looked ahead.

Not at Arvind—

But through him.

"As if… something was watching."

The room fell silent again.

Heavier this time.

Mr. Arvind didn't respond immediately.

Because—

He had felt it too.

A presence.

Faint.

Distant.

But real.

"…You're not imagining it," Arvind said quietly.

Jay's eyes narrowed.

"…Then what is it?"

A pause.

A long one.

Then—

Arvind spoke.

"Something connected to your power."

Jay's chest tightened slightly.

"…Friend or enemy?"

Arvind's expression darkened.

"…We don't know yet."

At that exact moment—

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

Everything went dark.

For a split second—

There was nothing.

No sound.

No movement.

And then—

Jay felt it.

A cold presence—

Right behind him.

His body froze.

Slowly—

He turned.

But there was nothing there.

The lights came back.

The room returned to normal.

But Jay's heartbeat had quickened.

"…You felt that too, didn't you?" he asked.

Mr. Arvind didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

Silence followed.

But it wasn't empty.

It was filled with tension.

With anticipation.

Because now—

It wasn't just about Jay anymore.

Something else—

Had noticed him.

And whatever it was—

It wasn't far away. 🔥👁️
