I walked through the field with Urdon beside me. The plants were tall now. Green and full. The leaves were wide and the stems were thick.
"Look at this," I said.
"I am looking."
"These were just seeds a few weeks ago."
"They grew fast."
"The soil is good now. The rain helped."
He stopped and bent down. His good hand reached out and touched one of the leaves. It was soft and green.
"We will have food," he said.
"We will."
"Real food. Enough to share."
"Yes."
He stood up and looked at me. His face was calm and steady.
"The pack is strong again," he said.
"They are."
"You did that."
"We did that. All of us."
He reached out and took my hand. His fingers were warm and rough.
"We did it together," he said.
I held his hand and we walked through the field. The sun was warm and the sky was clear.
