I walked out to the field and stopped. The plants were taller. Not by much. But enough to notice. The green shoots had become small stems with leaves on them. I knelt down and touched one of the leaves. It was soft and thin.
"You are staring at them again."
Urdon came up behind me. His feet were steady. No limp today.
"They are growing," I said.
"They are."
"Look at them. They were just seeds a few days ago."
"And now they are plants."
He knelt down beside me and looked at the row. His good hand reached out and touched the same leaf I had touched.
"These will be food," he said.
"These will be food."
"We will eat them."
"We will."
He stood up and offered me his hand. I took it and stood up.
"Walk with me," he said.
"Where?"
"Around. I want to see everything."
We walked along the fence line. The posts were straight and solid. The vines were tight. I put my hand on one of the posts and pushed. It did not move.
