Freda Pov
I woke up early and went straight to the field. The ground was dry and cracked. Hard patches everywhere. I knelt down and put my hand on the dirt.
"This is going to be tough."
Mara came up behind me. She had a small pouch tied to her belt.
"The seeds are from last year," she said. "Not many left."
"How many?"
"Maybe enough for three rows."
"Then we make three rows count."
I took the pouch from her and opened it. The seeds were small and dark. They looked old. Some of them were shriveled. I picked one out and rolled it between my fingers.
"Will these even grow?"
"They might. We have to try."
"We have to try."
I said it back to her. She nodded.
The younger wolves came out a little later. Eamon and the other boy. A girl whose name I still could not remember. She had dark hair and her sleeves were too short for her arms. She stood at the edge of the field and watched me.
"You are going to plant those?" she asked.
