Chapter 28 - The Library Beneath the Archive

The corridor beyond the vault stretched into darkness.

Ancient lights flickered to life one by one along the stone walls, casting long shadows across the floor. The air inside the Seventh Archive felt different from the outside tunnel.

Heavier.

Older.

Like the place had been waiting for centuries for someone to return.

I stepped forward first.

The bronze ring on my finger pulsed steadily, sending faint warmth through my hand. Each pulse felt like a heartbeat that didn't belong to me.

Behind me, I could hear the others entering.

Seo-yeon.

Hae-in.

Tae-jun.

Ara.

Director Kang.

Even the silver-haired man with the blue ring followed, his calm footsteps echoing softly behind us.

Hae-in moved closer to my side.

"…I don't like this place."

Her emerald ring glowed faintly as she spoke.

Tae-jun immediately agreed.

"Same. The breathing monster thing? Not a fan."

Seo-yeon glanced around the corridor.

"What kind of archive has a monster inside it anyway?"

The silver-haired man answered casually.

"The kind that protects its secrets."

That didn't make anyone feel better.

We continued walking.

The corridor curved slightly, and the stone walls gradually widened.

Then suddenly—

The passage opened into a massive underground chamber.

Everyone stopped.

The room looked nothing like the mechanical corridors we had passed earlier.

Instead, towering wooden shelves filled the entire chamber.

Thousands of books.

Ancient scrolls.

Leather-bound records.

Dusty archives stacked from floor to ceiling.

Tae-jun blinked slowly.

"…Is this a library?"

Director Kang looked just as surprised.

"This shouldn't exist."

Ara stepped forward carefully, examining the shelves.

"The Archive stores knowledge from every generation of guardians."

She ran her fingers across the dusty books.

"Records of the rings."

Seo-yeon immediately became curious.

"Records?"

She moved toward one of the shelves and pulled out a thick book.

Dust exploded into the air.

She coughed.

"Okay… nobody's cleaned this place in about two hundred years."

Hae-in laughed quietly.

"Maybe the monster handles janitor duties."

But Seo-yeon had already started flipping through the pages.

Her expression slowly changed.

"…These aren't stories."

She turned the book so we could see.

Inside were detailed drawings.

Circular objects.

Seven different designs.

Seven rings.

Ara stepped closer.

"Yes."

Her crimson ring flickered softly.

"These are the Resonance Rings."

Each page contained careful observations.

Energy diagrams.

Symbols.

Notes written in different handwriting styles across centuries.

Director Kang leaned over one page.

"These look like research notes."

Tae-jun scratched his head.

"So this entire secret underground archive…"

He gestured dramatically.

"…is basically a giant science project about magic rings?"

"No," Ara corrected quietly.

"About guardians."

Seo-yeon had already moved deeper into the shelves.

She was scanning titles rapidly now, as if searching for something she didn't fully understand.

Then suddenly—

She froze.

Her hand hovered over a familiar spine.

The book looked newer than the others.

Its cover was dark brown leather.

And on the front—

A small symbol was engraved.

Three overlapping circles.

Seo-yeon slowly pulled the book out.

The moment she looked at the cover, her eyes widened.

"…Wait."

Hae-in noticed immediately.

"What?"

Seo-yeon turned the book around slowly.

"This handwriting…"

Her voice grew quieter.

"…I know it."

Everyone stepped closer.

Director Kang frowned.

"Where have you seen it?"

Seo-yeon opened the first page.

Her gold ring glimmered faintly in the dim light.

"This… is my grandmother's handwriting."

Silence fell across the chamber.

Even the silver-haired man looked surprised.

"You're certain?"

Seo-yeon nodded slowly.

"My grandmother wrote journals exactly like this."

She flipped through several pages quickly.

Research notes.

Ring diagrams.

Observations about resonance reactions.

Then she stopped suddenly.

Because halfway through the book—

There was a name.

Written in large letters.

Kang Ji-hoon

Tae-jun leaned over her shoulder.

"…Wait."

He blinked.

"Hyung, that's your name."

I stepped closer slowly.

Seo-yeon pointed at the date written beside the entry.

1997.

Another page.

1999.

Another page.

2000.

Director Kang's expression darkened.

"That's impossible."

Hae-in looked confused.

"What's impossible?"

He pointed at the dates.

"These entries were written years before Ji-hoon was born."

The room went silent again.

Seo-yeon turned another page slowly.

Her breathing grew shallow.

"There's more."

The next pages contained long research notes.

Discussions between two researchers.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Professor Kang.

Hae-in frowned.

"Professor… Kang?"

Director Kang's eyes narrowed.

"That could refer to several people."

But Seo-yeon shook her head.

"No."

She pointed at the signature.

"This is my grandmother's writing."

She turned the page again.

A second handwriting appeared.

Sharp.

Precise.

The name below it read:

Professor Kang Min-seok

My heart skipped.

I had heard that name before.

"My grandfather," I whispered.

Everyone turned toward me.

Ara looked stunned.

"Your grandfather was a researcher?"

I nodded slowly.

"He disappeared before I was born."

Seo-yeon read one of the notes aloud.

"The Bronze Guardian candidate will eventually appear within the Kang bloodline."

Another line followed beneath it.

"If the resonance theory is correct, the rings will find each other once the candidate awakens."

Hae-in looked between us.

"…You're telling me our grandparents were studying these rings together?"

Director Kang nodded slowly.

"It appears so."

Tae-jun folded his arms dramatically.

"So basically…"

He pointed at me and Seo-yeon.

"…our entire crisis is the result of your grandparents' secret research project."

Seo-yeon sighed.

"…When you say it like that it sounds ridiculous."

But something else caught my attention.

On the last page of the book—

There was a list.

A strange list.

Military records.

Classified documents.

And at the top of the page—

One name repeated several times.

Kang Ji-hoon

My stomach tightened.

Seo-yeon flipped to the next page.

More military records.

More predictions.

But no other names appeared.

Just mine.

Tae-jun whispered,

"…Why are there military records about you?"

Director Kang examined the pages carefully.

"These documents reference the early military archive program."

He looked at me seriously.

"They were preparing a file for you."

Hae-in frowned.

"But Ji-hoon wasn't even born yet."

Director Kang's voice lowered.

"Exactly."

At that moment—

A loud metallic click echoed across the chamber.

Everyone turned.

One of the tall bookshelves had shifted slightly.

Dust fell from its base.

Ara's crimson ring glowed faintly.

"There's a hidden mechanism."

The shelf slowly moved aside.

Revealing a narrow passage behind it.

Cold air flowed out from the darkness beyond.

Tae-jun groaned.

"Oh great."

He pointed at the opening.

"Another creepy tunnel."

Hae-in stepped closer beside me.

Her emerald ring flickered again.

"…Ji-hoon."

"What?"

She looked nervous.

"My ring is reacting."

My bronze ring pulsed in response.

Both lights shimmered together.

Then suddenly—

A distant rumbling echoed from deep within the Archive.

The same breathing sound from earlier.

But louder now.

Closer.

Dust shook loose from the ceiling.

Seo-yeon grabbed the book quickly.

"We should take this with us."

Ara nodded.

"The answers are deeper inside."

The silver-haired man watched the hidden passage with quiet excitement.

"So."

He smiled slightly.

"The next chamber is opening."

Tae-jun sighed dramatically.

"I knew this library was just the tutorial level."

I took one step toward the hidden passage.

And the bronze ring pulsed harder than ever before.

Not with fear.

But with recognition.

Somewhere deeper in the Archive—

Something ancient was waiting.

And somehow…

It already knew my name.

Kang Ji-hoon.
