Chapter 25 - The City Beneath the Rain

The voice didn't disappear.

Even after the street stopped shaking…

Even after the hunters backed away…

Even after the rain softened into a quiet drizzle…

It was still there.

Faint.

Like someone whispering from the bottom of a deep well.

"You promised."

My chest tightened.

I pressed my hand against my head.

The bronze ring on my finger was warm now.

Not burning.

Just… awake.

"Ji-hoon!"

Seo-yeon's voice snapped me back.

Her hands gripped my shoulders.

"Hey. Look at me."

I blinked.

The world slowly returned.

Broken streetlights.

The cracked asphalt.

Hunters retreating toward their black vans.

And the strange crimson glow still leaking through the crack in the road.

"What happened?" Seo-yeon asked.

Her eyes were sharp now. Serious.

She only used that expression when things were really wrong.

"I heard something."

Dae-hyun stepped closer.

"What kind of something?"

I hesitated.

Because saying it felt ridiculous.

And terrifying at the same time.

"…A voice."

Tae-jun rubbed his neck.

"Well that's comforting."

But the crimson-ring girl didn't smile.

Her expression had turned pale.

Rainwater slid down her dark hair, and the red ring on her finger glowed faintly like a hidden ember.

For the first time since we met her, Director Kang spoke her name.

"Ara."

The girl finally looked up.

Her full name was Yoon Ara.

The name suited her strangely well.

Soft.

Elegant.

Yet something in her eyes carried a quiet intensity.

Like someone who had seen too much history.

Ara's expression had turned serious now.

"What did the voice say?"

My throat felt dry.

"…It called me the Bronze Guardian."

Director Kang inhaled slowly.

Like a man who had just heard confirmation of a nightmare.

"And?"

He asked quietly.

I swallowed.

"…It said I promised to open the Gate."

Silence fell over the street.

Even the rain seemed to pause.

"No."

Ara whispered.

"That can't be right."

Director Kang didn't deny it.

But the way his eyes darkened said everything.

Seo-yeon crossed her arms.

"Okay I really hate the fact that everyone else seems to understand what that means except me."

She pointed at the ground.

"Can someone explain why the underground demon king apparently has Ji-hoon on speed dial?"

No one answered immediately.

Instead—

The ground trembled again.

But this time…

It wasn't the crack in the street.

It was something else.

Something far away.

Deep beneath the city.

Director Kang suddenly turned toward the hunters.

"Everyone leave."

The hunter leader frowned.

"…Director?"

"You've already disturbed enough."

"But the rings—"

Director Kang's voice cut through the rain.

"Now."

The authority in his voice made even the hunters hesitate.

Then slowly… they began pulling back.

Vehicles started.

Doors slammed.

The man who held the blue ring paused before entering his van.

He looked directly at me.

His eyes gleaming with excitement.

"This isn't over."

He said softly.

Then the vans drove away.

Their headlights fading into the wet night.

Soon the street was empty again.

Just us.

Just rain.

Just the strange silence hanging in the air.

Seo-yeon exhaled loudly.

"…Well that was terrifying."

Tae-jun nodded.

"I give tonight a solid zero out of ten."

She clapped once.

"Tonight we discovered:"

She started counting on her fingers.

"Ancient rings."

"Secret hunters."

"Demon kings calling Ji-hoon."

Tae-jun added,

"And the city trying to collapse."

"Exactly."

But Ara was still staring at me.

Her eyes filled with something complicated.

Fear.

Memory.

And something else.

"…You really don't remember anything."

I shook my head.

"No."

Director Kang stepped closer.

"That voice."

He said carefully.

"…was the King Beyond the Gate."

The name sent a cold chill through me.

Seo-yeon crossed her arms.

"Cool cool cool."

"Ancient underground king talking to Ji-hoon telepathically."

"Completely normal Tuesday."

But Director Kang wasn't listening.

He was staring at the ground.

Specifically…

The crack in the asphalt.

The red glow had faded.

But something else had appeared.

A symbol.

Carved into the exposed concrete below.

Dae-hyun crouched down.

"…That wasn't here before."

The symbol looked ancient.

Circular.

Seven lines radiating outward.

Like a broken star.

My ring suddenly pulsed.

Hard.

Pain shot up my arm.

"Ji-hoon?" Seo-yeon said.

I staggered slightly.

And then—

A memory flashed.

Dark corridors.

Metal walls.

Flashing emergency lights.

Sirens screaming.

Not ancient.

Not ruins.

A facility.

Hidden underground.

I gasped.

Director Kang noticed immediately.

"What did you see?"

"…A building."

Everyone froze.

"What kind of building?" Dae-hyun asked.

"Not old."

I struggled to explain.

"…Modern."

Ara's eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

I shook my head.

"No… it was real."

Another fragment surfaced.

A massive metal door.

Marked with the same symbol now carved into the street.

Seo-yeon leaned forward.

"Wait."

She pointed at the symbol.

"You mean that one?"

"…Yes."

Director Kang looked disturbed now.

Truly disturbed.

"That symbol…"

He murmured.

"…was erased from history."

Tae-jun frowned.

"What is it?"

Director Kang answered quietly.

"The Seventh Archive."

The name sent a strange chill through the air.

Seo-yeon blinked.

"…That sounds like a secret government project."

"Something like that."

Director Kang said.

Dae-hyun crossed his arms.

"I thought all records about the rings were destroyed."

"They were."

Director Kang replied.

"…Except one place."

Ara slowly turned toward the city skyline.

The rain shimmered under the streetlights as she spoke.

"The Archive."

Tae-jun groaned.

"Oh great."

"Secret underground libraries are always a good sign."

Seo-yeon frowned.

"Wait."

She looked at Director Kang.

"You're telling me there's a hidden facility somewhere under the city that stores information about the rings?"

Director Kang nodded slowly.

"It was built centuries ago."

"…But rebuilt many times since."

My mind raced.

The memory was becoming clearer.

The sirens.

The metal doors.

The voices shouting.

And someone grabbing my arm.

"Ji-hoon, hurry!"

I clenched my fist.

"There was an evacuation."

Everyone looked at me.

"The place was collapsing."

Director Kang's eyes widened slightly.

"…So the Archive still exists."

Ara shook her head slowly.

"No."

She pointed at the cracked street.

"If the symbol appeared tonight…"

Her voice dropped.

"…that means something just woke it up.

Lightning flashed across the clouds.

Far across the city skyline…

A distant building flickered.

Just for a moment.

Like power surging through something buried deep underground.

Seo-yeon noticed it too.

"…Did you see that?"

Dae-hyun nodded slowly.

Director Kang sighed.

"Well."

He said.

"That answers one question."

Tae-jun raised an eyebrow.

"What question?"

Director Kang looked toward the glowing skyline.

"The Archive is active again."

The bronze ring pulsed.

Harder this time.

Almost like it was pointing.

Calling me somewhere.

Seo-yeon noticed.

She grabbed my wrist.

"…Don't tell me."

I sighed.

"…It's there."

Tae-jun groaned.

"I hate it when magical jewelry gives directions."

Ara looked at me carefully.

"If your memories are sealed…"

She said.

"…the Archive might be the only place that can unlock them."

Dae-hyun nodded slowly.

"Which means someone probably reopened it."

Director Kang's voice became serious.

"And whoever did…"

He looked directly at me.

"…knows you're coming."

A cold wind passed through the empty street.

Somewhere deep beneath the city…

Ancient machines had started moving again.

Doors unlocking.

Lights flickering back to life.

Waiting.

For the Bronze Guardian.

Seo-yeon sighed loudly.

"Well."

She said.

"Guess we're breaking into a secret underground archive."

Tae-jun raised his hand.

"Can we at least get food first?"

For the first time that night…

Seo-yeon laughed.

But even as we started walking away…

I couldn't stop thinking about the memory.

Because in that collapsing facility…

Right before everything went dark…

Someone had said something to me.

Something important.

Something I still couldn't fully remember.

But one sentence remained clear.

"If the Gate ever opens… the Archive must fall first."

And suddenly…

I wasn't sure if we were going there to find answers.

Or to destroy the last place that still knew the truth.
