Rameses had never thought that it would be possible for his love to deepen further.
And yet, as he watched whilst Kai struggled and smiled his way through the effects of khalis withdrawals, trying harder with every passing day to change the habits he had fallen into before - he felt his love for him shift.
It was not as profound as the moment he had first glimpsed that red thread of fate that had led from his own heart to Kai's, or even the first time he had taken his hand at the age of ten and he had first seen his hazel eyes, golden hair and a smile that was just like sunlight.
Those moments touched his very soul in a way that was close to a divine revelation.
Yet seeing Kai fight, and also persevere, in such a visceral and distinctly human way, reshaped his love into something new and unexpected.
He had struggled at first to identify precisely what he was feeling and why.
