The infirmary after midnight felt like a different building entirely.
During the day there were voices, footsteps, nurses moving in and out, doors opening, medicine trays clinking, students complaining dramatically about headaches and minor injuries.
Now it was almost silent.
Lyra had meant to stay awake. She had promised herself she would.
Sienna lay asleep in the bed, breathing steadily now, one hand resting near the blanket. The swelling near her temple had gone down a little. Color had returned faintly to her cheeks.
Lyra had pulled a chair close beside the bed, folded her arms on the mattress, then rested her head on them just for a minute.
Just to close her eyes, that had been hours ago. She stirred when something warm brushed lightly across her cheek.
At first she thought she was dreaming. Then the touch came again, fingers sliding once near her jaw.
