Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: No Time to Think

The door sealed behind them with a dull thud.

Kai turned instantly, pressing his palm against it. Cold. Solid. No seams. No way back.

"So that's it," Vex said quietly. "Forward only."

The room they'd entered was long and narrow, lit by a dim white glow that seemed to come from nowhere. The walls were smooth, almost reflective—but when Kai looked closer, he realized they weren't mirrors.

They were memories.

Not clear images. Blurred shapes. Movements. Feelings.

The air felt heavy, pressing against his chest.

"Do you feel that?" Kai asked.

Vex nodded. "Yeah. Like the room's waiting."

A sharp click echoed.

Then the voice returned.

"STAGE TWENTY-ONE INITIATED."

The floor beneath them split into moving panels, sliding and shifting slowly, like a puzzle rearranging itself. Symbols flashed briefly on the ground—arrows, warning marks, unfamiliar signs.

"NEW CONDITION," the voice continued.

"NO TIME WILL BE GIVEN."

Kai's stomach dropped.

Before either of them could speak, the room lurched.

The panels began moving faster.

"Move!" Kai shouted.

They ran.

Not blindly—carefully. Kai watched the floor, noticing patterns in the movement. Panels with faint cracks dropped seconds later. Panels that hummed softly shifted sideways before collapsing.

"Left—now!" Kai yelled.

Vex followed without hesitation.

Behind them, the floor fell away into darkness.

From the walls, shadows peeled themselves free.

They didn't attack immediately.

They followed.

Matching their pace.

Learning.

Kai felt the pressure build in his head again, the familiar sensation of the game pushing at his thoughts.

Hurry.

Choose.

Don't think.

"No," Kai muttered through clenched teeth. "I won't rush."

He slowed—just a little.

The shadow nearest to him twitched, like it didn't expect that.

Vex noticed. "You see that?"

"It wants panic," Kai said. "Speed. Mistakes."

Ahead, the path split into three.

No signs. No clues.

The shadows surged closer.

Kai inhaled slowly, forcing his heart to steady.

He watched the shadows instead of the paths.

One of them leaned—almost unconsciously—toward the middle route.

"That one," Kai said, pointing left. "We don't go where it wants."

They veered left.

The moment they did, the middle path collapsed entirely, shadows spilling into the void with a distorted shriek.

The voice echoed again, sharp this time.

"…ADAPTATION DETECTED."

The room shook.

"INCREASING PRESSURE."

The shadows grew bolder now, stretching farther, brushing against Kai's arm.

Cold.

Hungry.

He felt the echo of his lost power stir faintly—but he pushed it down. He wouldn't rely on that again.

They reached the end of the corridor just as the floor gave way behind them.

Kai slammed his hand against the wall.

A door appeared.

They fell through it together—

—and landed hard on solid ground.

The door vanished instantly.

The room they were in now was smaller. Quieter. Safe—for the moment.

Kai lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, chest rising and falling.

Vex laughed softly. "You know… I think it's mad at you."

Kai closed his eyes.

"Good," he said. "Let it be."

Above them, unseen, the game watched.

And for the first time since it began—

It hesitated.
