Silence followed them.
Not the calm kind—this silence was tense, stretched thin, like something was about to snap.
Kai stood still, listening to his own breathing. The room they had been thrown into was wide and empty, its ceiling lost in darkness. The floor was smooth stone, cold beneath his feet. No symbols. No doors.
No instructions.
"That's worse," Vex said quietly. "The game never stays quiet for long."
Kai nodded. His body still felt strange—lighter somehow, yet hollow. The shadow power was gone, but the memory of it lingered, like an echo under his skin.
"I think it's angry," Kai said.
As if responding, the air trembled.
A low hum filled the room, vibrating through their bones. Lines began to etch themselves into the walls, glowing faintly white. Not words. Diagrams.
Paths. Decisions. Outcomes.
The game was recalculating.
A voice echoed—not loud, not cold. Curious.
"SUBJECT KAI HAS DEVIATED."
Kai clenched his fists.
"POWER REJECTION DETECTED."
The diagrams shifted, rearranging themselves faster now.
"ADJUSTING STAGE DIFFICULTY."
Vex swore under his breath. "That's not good."
The floor split.
Not violently—precisely. Panels slid apart, revealing multiple paths leading in different directions. Each path looked identical: narrow corridors swallowed by darkness.
At the center of the room, something rose slowly from the floor.
A clock.
Old. Cracked. Its hands moved without numbers, spinning unevenly.
The voice spoke again.
"NEW RULE INTRODUCED."
The ticking stopped.
"YOU WILL LOSE SOMETHING EVERY TIME YOU HESITATE."
Kai's heart skipped.
Before he could speak, the clock shattered.
The corridors lit up.
And suddenly—Kai wasn't standing next to Vex anymore.
"Vex?" Kai called.
No answer.
The corridor behind him sealed shut.
He was alone.
The walls around him shifted, changing subtly with each step he took, like the space itself was watching how he moved. Kai forced himself to stay calm, focusing on one thing: survival.
He checked his breathing. Counted his steps. Listened.
Then he saw it.
At the end of the corridor stood a door—half-open.
And on the wall beside it, written in faint light:
ONE CHOICE. ONE LOSS.
Kai's stomach tightened.
He approached slowly. As he reached the door, images flashed across the walls—memories.
Moments he hadn't thought about in years.
Laughing. Trusting. Being normal.
The door creaked.
Behind it was another corridor… and a figure standing in the center.
It looked like him.
Same face. Same posture.
But its eyes were wrong—too knowing.
"You hesitated before," the copy said calmly. "That's why she was taken."
Kai's blood ran cold. "You're lying."
The copy tilted its head. "Am I?"
The walls pulsed.
Kai felt pressure in his chest, like something invisible tightening.
"You can hesitate again," the copy continued. "Or you can act."
The corridor split behind the copy—two exits.
One glowed faintly.
The other was completely dark.
Kai understood instantly.
A test.
Not of strength.
Of decision.
If he hesitated, the game would take something again.
If he chose wrong…
Kai closed his eyes for half a second.
Then he moved.
He ran—not toward either exit, but straight at the copy.
The moment he passed through it, the figure shattered like glass.
The corridor collapsed.
Kai hit the ground hard—and rolled to his feet as the room reformed around him.
The voice echoed again.
"…INTERESTING."
A door opened ahead.
Kai stepped through.
On the other side, Vex stood waiting, breathing hard but alive.
Their eyes met.
They didn't smile.
They didn't speak.
They both understood now.
The Death Game had changed its strategy.
If it couldn't control Kai with power—
It would try to break him with choices.
And next time…
It wouldn't give him time to think.
