Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — The Hall of Mirrors

The air in the next room was different.

It wasn't cold like the last one.

It wasn't wet.

It was still.

Kai's heart beat loudly, like it was trying to escape his chest.

The door behind them slammed shut without anyone touching it.

Mei froze, staring at the walls.

"This… this isn't right," she whispered.

Her voice sounded like it was coming from far away.

The room was full of mirrors.

Not just one or two — dozens, covering every inch of the walls, ceiling, and floor.

The mirrors didn't reflect light the way normal mirrors did.

They reflected fear.

Kai stepped forward, and the mirror showed him…

not his face…

but his body hanging upside down, eyes wide, mouth open in a scream.

He blinked hard.

The reflection didn't change.

Luca swallowed and pointed at his own reflection.

"Is that… me?"

But the reflection wasn't Luca.

It was Luca with his skin peeling off, eyes turning black, and a smile that didn't belong to him.

Freya's hands flew to her mouth.

"No. No. No. This is—"

The air in the room thickened.

A soft voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere:

"WELCOME TO THE HALL OF TRUTH."

Kai's skin crawled.

He knew that voice.

It was the same voice from the speakers.

The one that said:

"EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE IS YOUR LAST."

Now it sounded like it was speaking directly into their minds.

"To leave this room, you must face what you fear the most."

Mei's eyes went wide.

"Why… why is it showing us this?"

Kai's voice was steady, but his hands were shaking.

"Because it wants us to believe it."

A mirror on the far wall suddenly lit up.

A key appeared inside it — floating in the glass like it was trapped.

Kai took a step closer.

The key was real enough to see every dent, every scratch.

It looked like the key to a prison door.

Then the mirror changed.

Kai saw himself in the reflection again.

Only this time…

he wasn't tied up.

He was standing in a room filled with darkness.

In his hand was a knife.

His eyes were cold.

He was smiling.

And behind him was a shadow.

A shadow that looked like it was waiting.

Kai's stomach dropped.

He took another step back.

The mirror cracked.

The crack spread like a spider web across the glass, and the sound was like bones breaking.

A low whisper rose in the air:

"THIS IS YOUR TRUE SELF."

Kai's breathing became heavy.

His friends were staring at their mirrors now.

Luca's reflection showed him drowning in a pool of black water.

Mei's showed her standing alone in a burning hallway.

Freya's showed her being chased by something with no face.

Each of them was trapped in their own fear.

But the key was still there.

It floated behind the glass, shining like it was begging to be taken.

Kai looked around.

"Okay," he said, voice shaking.

"We need to get the key. That's the only way."

Luca nodded, but his eyes were unfocused.

"I can't move," he whispered. "I… I can't."

Mei took a step forward.

"No, we can do this," she said, trying to sound strong.

She raised her hand toward the mirror.

The glass rippled like water.

The key floated closer.

Mei reached for it…

And the mirror pulled her in.

Not physically.

But her mind was pulled.

Her eyes went blank.

The room around her disappeared.

Kai saw Mei's face change, like she was suddenly trapped inside her own nightmare.

Her body stood still, but her eyes were staring into the mirror as if she could not look away.

Kai rushed to her.

"Mei!"

But his voice sounded far away.

The whispers got louder.

"YOUR FEAR IS YOUR PRISON."

Kai grabbed Mei's shoulders and shook her.

"Mei, snap out of it!"

She blinked.

For a moment, her eyes were normal.

Then she whispered:

"It's… him."

Kai's heart stopped.

"Who?"

Mei's voice was barely a breath.

"The shadow… it's inside the mirror."

Kai felt the air around him change.

The room seemed to get smaller.

The mirrors began to vibrate.

The key floated closer to the center of the room now, as if the room itself was pulling it toward the shadows.

Kai looked at Luca.

Luca was shaking.

His reflection in the mirror was no longer drowning.

It was smiling.

And then Luca's reflection lifted its hand…

and waved.

Kai's blood ran cold.

The reflection was not just showing Luca's fear…

it was controlling it.

The mirrors were not just showing their worst nightmares.

They were trying to turn them into reality.

A loud crack echoed through the room.

The mirrors began to shatter one by one.

Each shattered mirror released a dark shape that looked like smoke with teeth.

The smoke shapes slithered toward the group.

They didn't attack physically.

They attacked the mind.

Kai saw the shadows moving in the air like living things.

One of them floated toward Freya and wrapped around her.

Freya screamed, but it wasn't a normal scream.

It sounded like someone else's voice coming out of her mouth.

Kai lunged forward and grabbed Freya's wrist.

The shadow loosened.

Freya collapsed, shaking.

Kai dragged her away from the mirror.

"Don't look at them!" he shouted.

The smoke shapes hissed and slid back into the broken mirrors.

But one mirror stayed intact.

The one holding the key.

Kai knew what he had to do.

He had to get the key before the room trapped them forever.

He ran toward the mirror.

The key floated closer.

Kai reached for it…

and the mirror showed him his worst fear again:

A version of Kai, standing behind him, holding a knife.

His face was blank.

The shadow behind him moved closer.

Kai's hand froze.

He felt a chill run down his spine.

The shadow whispered:

"TAKE IT. KILL THEM. THEN YOU WILL BE FREE."

Kai's heart pounded.

His hand trembled.

But he remembered something:

He wasn't the same Kai the mirror wanted him to be.

He wasn't the scared boy anymore.

He was the one who survived.

Kai gritted his teeth and shouted:

"No."

He grabbed the key and yanked it out of the mirror.

The mirror shattered instantly.

The room shook.

The smoke shapes screamed and vanished.

The lights flickered.

The door at the end of the room opened.

But before they could move…

The shadow Kai saw in the mirror appeared behind them.

Not in the reflection.

In real life.

Its eyes were black holes.

Its smile was too wide.

It spoke in Kai's voice:

"You took the key. But you will never leave."

Kai's friends stared in horror.

The shadow moved closer.

Kai lifted the key like a weapon.

The shadow laughed.

And the last thing Kai saw was:

The key turning in his hand…

as if it had a will of its own.

Kai has the key…

but the shadow is now real.
