Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Room That Watches Back

The door closed behind them without a sound.

Not a slam.

Not a creak.

Just… gone.

Kai turned sharply, his breath catching. The hallway they had just escaped from had vanished, replaced by smooth black walls that reflected nothing—not light, not shadows, not even their own faces.

"This room is wrong," Mei whispered.

The air felt thick, like it resisted every breath. Each step Kai took felt heavier, as if the floor itself was judging him.

Then the lights came on.

Hundreds of eyes opened along the walls.

Not real eyes—carvings. Stone eyes. But every single one moved, slowly turning until they were all staring at the group.

Freya staggered back. "No. No, no, no—this isn't another illusion, is it?"

A voice answered her.

Not the announcer.

Not mechanical.

Human.

"Only partly."

The floor split down the middle.

A figure rose from below, wrapped in shadow, its face blurred as if reality refused to focus on it. Where its eyes should have been was a hollow glow—soft, pale, endless.

Kai's chest tightened.

This wasn't a monster.

This was a warden.

"Welcome to Observation," the figure said calmly. "Room Ten."

Luca clenched his fists. "So what? You watch us? Laugh when we scream?"

The figure tilted its head. "We measure."

The eyes on the walls began to glow.

Suddenly—

Mei gasped.

The room shifted.

Each of them was no longer standing together.

Kai stood alone.

Kai

He was back at the beginning.

The concrete room.

The ropes.

The words on the wall.

But this time, he wasn't tied.

He was standing.

And everyone else was kneeling.

Mei.

Luca.

Freya.

All of them, bruised and exhausted, looking up at him.

"Why didn't you save us?" Luca asked quietly.

Kai shook his head. "This isn't real."

Mei's eyes filled with tears. "You had the key. You had the power."

The shadows crawled up Kai's arms.

"You chose yourself."

"No," Kai whispered. "I'm trying to keep us alive."

The room laughed.

A sharp pain tore through Kai's chest.

A symbol burned onto his palm—the mark of Vex—glowing faintly.

"Leadership requires sacrifice," the room whispered.

Kai screamed—

—and the illusion shattered.

The Others

They collapsed back into reality, gasping.

Freya was crying silently.

Luca stared at his hands, shaking. "It showed me leaving you all behind."

Mei swallowed hard. "It told me I was the reason this started."

The warden watched them with interest.

"Fear reveals truth," it said. "And truth decides progression."

Kai clenched his marked hand.

"What do you want from us?"

The warden stepped closer.

"This game was never about survival," it said. "It is about selection."

The eyes on the walls dimmed.

"One of you will not leave this room as human."

Silence.

"What?" Freya whispered.

The floor trembled.

A pedestal rose from the center of the room. On it sat three objects:

A broken mirror

A rusted blade

A black key, pulsing softly

"Choose," the warden said. "Reflection. Violence. Or Transformation."

Kai stepped forward.

Everyone reached for him.

"Kai, don't—" Mei started.

He stopped inches from the pedestal.

The mark on his palm burned hotter.

And then—

The door behind them began to open on its own.

Something massive moved in the darkness beyond.

The warden smiled.

"You have thirty seconds."
