Kai's stomach turned as the trap door groaned wider, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness. A cold, fetid air rose from below, carrying the unmistakable stench of decay. Each breath made his chest ache.
"We… we have to go down, right?" Mei's voice trembled. Her eyes darted to the gaping hole, then to Kai.
Kai nodded, gripping the ropes that still bound their wrists. "We don't have a choice. Whoever put us here… they're watching. They want us to move."
Luca hesitated, glancing at the shadows curling along the walls. "I swear… I can hear… something down there."
A low growl rumbled from the staircase. Not far, not hidden. Close enough. Kai's heart pounded, but he forced himself to think. Fear could freeze you… or sharpen you.
One step at a time, they descended. The ropes cut into their skin, but no one complained — survival left no room for whining.
Halfway down, a faint glow illuminated the stairs. Symbols, similar to the ones on the walls above, carved and glowing faintly. Kai's eyes widened.
"TRUST NONE. YOUR MOVES ARE MONITORED."
Mei gasped, stepping back. Luca muttered under his breath, "What kind of sick game…?"
Kai's mind raced. If they didn't act carefully, the room — and now these stairs — could kill them.
A sudden clang echoed from below. Something metallic skidded across stone. Kai froze. The others followed his lead.
"Move slowly," he whispered. "And stay together."
Another growl, louder this time, echoed from the darkness. The floor vibrated slightly, as if something massive was pacing below, waiting.
Kai swallowed hard, trying to steady his nerves. Think, analyze, survive.
Then, the stairs gave way to a chamber. Torches flickered, revealing pits filled with black, writhing shadows. Something moved within them… something alive.
"Stay back!" Kai shouted, grabbing Mei by the arm.
But before anyone could react, a panel on the wall slid open, and a metallic voice echoed:
"FIRST TRIAL: STEP INTO THE SHADOWS… OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES."
A chill ran down their spines. The shadows seemed to stretch toward them, hungry, patient, and alive.
Kai's jaw clenched. His mind screamed: We have to survive. Whatever it takes…
A single step forward. That was all it would take.
And the Death Game continued.
