"I let you live when I shouldn't have. Now tell me—what happened to you?"
August's voice stilled the room, his eyes fixed on Elias, who lay on the bed. Elias drew a shallow breath, his lips parting, but no words came out.
Elias recomposed himself and leaned against the headboard. "Tell me you didn't tell her."
"Did you not hear me, Elias Hale?" The air around August dropped, displeased by Elias's blatant attempt to ignore his question. "Is common courtesy truly not practiced in the north?"
"Nothing!" Elias hissed, his wounds flaring. He sucked in a sharp breath through clenched teeth. "Nothing happened, August."
"Hah." August took a step back, scoffing.
"August." Elias exhaled, forcing himself to relax so he wouldn't aggravate his injuries. "Would you prefer I answer you with a lie?"
