Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Outer Sect Selection Trial Begins

The morning mist hung low over the sect, curling around stone steps and courtyards like restless spirits. Today was no ordinary day. The bell tolls echoed across the peaks, sending a shiver through every outer disciple. For many, it was the first step toward recognition, the chance to leave the Outer Sect and enter the hallowed halls of the Inner Sect.

Lui Yan adjusted his robes, feeling the familiar weight of his Nascent Soul Peak cultivation settle within him. The ethereal herb he discovered last night pulsed faintly in his jade vial, a reminder that even the smallest discoveries could tip the scales in unexpected ways.

Disciples from all corners of the Outer Sect had gathered, their excitement mingled with anxiety. Some whispered, some clenched fists in silent determination, and some, like Chen Wuying, radiated cold confidence.

"You'll see, Lui Yan," Chen Wuying said with a sneer, stepping beside him. "This trial… it's not for amateurs. Only the strongest survive."

Lui Yan met his gaze, calm as ever. "I intend to survive - and more."

From behind, Lin Yumo waved energetically. "Relax! If we panic, we'll be the first to trip over our own feet. Come on, the trial grounds await!"

-

The sect's trial arena was a sprawling plateau, layered with rugged cliffs, hidden paths, and pools of reflective qi energy. Elder Hua Yun stood at the edge, her gaze sweeping across the gathered disciples. "Today marks the beginning of your trial," she announced. "This is more than a test of strength. Observe, adapt, and understand the flow of qi. Only those who comprehend the essence of cultivation will advance."

A hush fell over the crowd. Then, the signal - a single bell - rang sharply.

Disciples scattered across the plateau, navigating obstacles, gathering herbs, and activating small formations placed to test their perception and instinct. Lui Yan moved deliberately, each step precise, each action considered. He could sense the energy shifts, subtle changes that hinted at hidden traps.

He noticed a faint trail of golden dust hovering above a cluster of jagged rocks - a clue indicating a hidden formation. Without hesitation, he extended his Nascent Soul perception, feeling the pulse of the trapped qi. Carefully, he manipulated the flow to deactivate the trap without triggering the surge that would have knocked most disciples unconscious.

Nearby, Lin Yumo gasped. "How did you - ?"

"Focus," Lui Yan said simply. "Every detail matters."

-

As Lui Yan rounded a rocky outcrop, he collided with a senior disciple - a towering figure with a menacing aura. A sudden surge of qi from the plateau's trials caused the man to stagger. Lui Yan's instincts kicked in, and he extended a hand to steady the senior, using just enough Nascent Soul power to stabilize him.

The disciple's eyes widened. "You… you're a Nascent Soul Peak?!"

Lui Yan nodded calmly. "Careful where you step. The trial doesn't forgive mistakes."

Word spread quickly. A ripple of shock passed through the gathered disciples - only a handful of top twenty cultivators could reach Nascent Soul Peak this early, and here was one moving with composure and precision.

Chen Wuying's face darkened. "So the rumors were true… he's far stronger than anyone expected."

Lin Yumo grinned beside Lui Yan. "Now it gets interesting. Let's see how the others handle a real Nascent Soul Peak in the mix!"

Meanwhile, Su Qingxue appeared across a ridge, observing silently. Her blade glinted, and the subtle flow of her qi suggested she, too, was no ordinary disciple. A quiet rivalry, and perhaps mutual respect, began to form, though neither admitted it yet.

-

Deeper into the trial, Lui Yan discovered a faint, unnatural glow emanating from the side of the plateau. Approaching cautiously, he uncovered a hidden spirit root - the rare kind that only manifested once every few years.

As he reached for it, a subtle trap triggered - a pulse of qi strong enough to knock most disciples unconscious. Lui Yan's Nascent Soul instincts allowed him to dodge just in time, stabilizing himself and carefully harvesting the root.

"Most would have fallen," Lin Yumo whispered, awe evident in his voice. "You just… make it look easy."

Lui Yan pocketed the root and moved on, aware that each moment here could make or break his place in the trial rankings. Every other disciple was either rushing blindly, panicking at traps, or showing off for recognition. Few had the patience to notice the subtle rewards hidden in plain sight.

-

Chen Wuying appeared again, his aura radiating hostility. "I warned you, Lui Yan. But you're still moving forward. Do you even understand the rules? The trial doesn't favor instinct - it favors strength and precision combined. Watch and learn."

Before Lui Yan could respond, Chen Wuying activated a small formation designed to block paths and force an early combat test. Rocks levitated, and a wave of qi surged toward Lui Yan. Calmly, Lui Yan adjusted his position, using Nascent Soul energy to counteract the flow and turn the formation back on itself. Chen Wuying staggered, caught off guard.

"Impossible…" Chen muttered, his pride bruised.

Lui Yan said nothing, moving forward with quiet resolve. Each step in the trial was calculated, a balance of observation and subtle power - strength concealed within calmness.

-

By midday, Lui Yan had collected rare herbs, avoided dangerous traps, and subtly outmaneuvered several competitors. He arrived at a reflective pool, where a faint aura suggested a minor treasure: a Qi-refining crystal capable of accelerating Nascent Soul cultivation temporarily.

Carefully, he retrieved it, noting how even the smallest resource could tip the scales. Lin Yumo clapped him on the shoulder. "You're unstoppable today. Everyone's going to talk about you after this trial."

Even Su Qingxue, observing from a distance, allowed a hint of admiration in her gaze.

-

As the sun dipped behind the peaks, casting long shadows across the trial grounds, Lui Yan paused on a cliff overlooking the arena. He could see the chaos of other disciples—some triumphant, others battered. The plateau was alive with qi energy, each wave a challenge, each pulse a test.

For a moment, Lui Yan allowed himself to breathe. Victory was not yet guaranteed, but his instincts, training, and careful observation had carried him further than most could have imagined.

A soft voice interrupted his thoughts. "You're not like the others."

Su Qingxue stepped beside him, her sword sheathed. "Most only see the trial as a contest. You see it as understanding."

Lui Yan offered a small nod. "A trial is more than a fight. Every obstacle, every challenge… teaches something."

Her lips curved faintly. "Perhaps we'll see each other again in the next round."

"Yes," he said quietly, the weight of his Nascent Soul cultivation steady within him. "And perhaps next time, we'll learn more than just from the trial itself."

The wind rustled, carrying the faint scent of herbs, blood, and spirit energy. The trial was far from over - but Lui Yan had already begun making his mark.
