Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Formation Trial

The sun had just begun its climb over the jagged peaks, spilling golden light across the outer sect's training grounds. Today was different - today, the outer disciples would face their second trial: the Formation Trial, a test not of raw power but of wit, coordination, and the ability to manipulate qi in patterns.

The courtyard was transformed. Ancient stones, etched with glowing runes, floated in midair. Some spun slowly, others shifted back and forth as if alive. Faint streams of energy pulsed through the ground, converging at points that marked the boundaries of intricate formations. The air hummed with power.

Elder Hua Yun's voice boomed over the courtyard: "This trial will test your understanding of qi patterns, the ability to react to shifting formations, and the cooperation - or cunning - you can summon. The first round will be solo; the second will be in pairs. Study carefully. Observe, think, and move with both your mind and body."

Lui Yan stepped forward, his hands brushing over the cool stone as he observed the formation. The energy lines were subtle but deliberate - tricky pathways that could redirect attacks, amplify or dampen qi, and even mislead one's senses. Each step could be a trap or an advantage.

-

Lin Yumo bounced beside him, grinning. "Oh, this is going to be fun! See that rotating pillar? If you step on it wrong, it flips you over! I saw Senior Chen nearly eat stone last year."

Lui Yan raised an eyebrow but said nothing, focusing on the faint flow of energy beneath the formations. His Nascent Soul perception tingled - he could sense the pathways, the pressure points, the distortions in the stone, subtle hints left by previous disciples who had trained here.

The first bell rang.

Disciples moved cautiously, some charging recklessly, others overthinking and freezing. Many triggered minor traps: stones tilted unexpectedly, energy lines surged and forced them to jump, slide, or duck. Laughter and curses mingled with the low hum of shifting qi.

Lui Yan's first step was deliberate. He allowed the energy to guide him, moving in perfect sync with the formation. A spinning stone pillar loomed ahead; most novices panicked and tried to leap. Lui Yan sidestepped, using a small flow of qi to subtly adjust the pillar's rotation. With a graceful slide, he passed it unharmed.

Yan Mei, observing from the sidelines again, whispered under her breath: "He's… incredible. Every move is like he's reading the formation like a map."

A sudden ripple of energy surged from a nearby rune circle. Lui Yan's instincts kicked in. He traced the invisible lines, feeling the subtle pressures in his body, and adjusted his steps in real time. The formation's hidden traps - small spikes, energy jolts, destabilizing stones - were bypassed with effortless precision.

However, midway, a new challenge appeared: a dual-element sphere, hovering and spinning, radiating both fire and ice qi. It pulsed rhythmically, blocking the only path forward. Touch it, and the elemental backlash could burn or freeze any novice to the bone.

Lui Yan paused. He sensed the sphere's rhythm, its subtle fluctuations. A pattern emerged. The sphere's core pulsed for a split second, weakening the energy shield just enough.

He took a deep breath, moving with fluid grace. One step, then another, and he passed through the sphere's pulse, his qi harmonizing with the elemental shift. Behind him, a crackling hiss sounded as a misstep from another novice triggered the sphere's defenses. Smoke and frost mingled in the air.

-

Lin Yumo arrived beside him, panting. "How did you - ? I barely got past that! You… you're insane!"

Lui Yan allowed himself the faintest smile. "Observe patterns, don't force them. Let the energy guide you."

Their attention was drawn to a disturbance at the far edge of the courtyard. Chen Wuying had entered the formation. His eyes gleamed with superiority. Unlike most novices, he wasn't reckless; he moved methodically, relying on his raw Foundation Establishment power to bulldoze through the formation. Flames licked at his hands as he struck, qi swirling like a storm.

But Lui Yan noticed something subtle: Wuying's over-reliance on power caused the formation to react unpredictably. Spikes shifted, pillars spun faster, and energy streams converged violently in his path. Each step became more dangerous, a self-made trap.

Lui Yan caught a small smile on Su Qingxue's lips as she observed. Even she seemed intrigued by the tactical contrast: brute force against calculated calm.

The bell rang again, signaling the end of the solo phase. Lui Yan had passed flawlessly. Many others had faltered, some barely making it to the finish. Chen Wuying had survived but was visibly shaken, sweat glistening on his brow.

Next came the pair phase. Disciples were instructed to form duos. Many scrambled for friends, some sought powerful partners, while others hesitated, wary of combining with rivals.

Lui Yan scanned the crowd. Yan Mei's nervous eyes met his, and he offered a subtle nod. She was skilled in minor healing spells and qi manipulation - enough to complement his precise Nascent Soul movements. Together, they could navigate the formation even more effectively.

Their first challenge required synchronized movement across dual paths of shifting stones. One misstep could send both of them tumbling into a trap. Lui Yan took the lead, subtly guiding Yan Mei with small shifts of qi. Her confidence grew as she followed, her steps becoming surer.

Meanwhile, Chen Wuying paired with a strong Foundation Establishment novice, attempting to steamroll through the obstacles. They moved aggressively, but their lack of synchronization became apparent. A rotating stone swung violently, and Wuying barely caught his partner, almost toppling them both.

"Balance, not brute force," Lui Yan murmured under his breath, feeling the flow of the formation and adjusting in real time.

Halfway through, a floating platform puzzle appeared - stones hovering over a small energy chasm. Each step released a minor trap unless executed with perfect timing. Lui Yan focused, visualizing the entire sequence like a map in his mind. Yan Mei mirrored him perfectly, their movements a fluid dance, blending Nascent Soul perception with her supportive energy flow.

-

Spectators whispered in awe: "That duo… they move like one."

Su Qingxue, perched above the courtyard on a small ledge, nodded approvingly. "Precision… harmony… rare among novices."

The final obstacle was a sealed circle, glowing faintly, with inscribed runes pulsing in synchronized waves. Step wrong, and the circle would release a shockwave of disruptive qi. Lui Yan's eyes narrowed. This was the true test - the formation's secret.

He instructed Yan Mei with subtle hand signals, not words. Qi flowed between them, forming a temporary bridge to stabilize the circle's energy. They moved as one, each step precise, each breath in harmony. As they crossed, the circle pulsed and stabilized, a soft glow marking their success.

The bell rang. Completion.

The crowd erupted. Lui Yan and Yan Mei had passed perfectly. Chen Wuying and his partner had made it, but it was evident - they had struggled.

Elder Hua Yun's voice carried across the courtyard. "This formation trial was not merely for strength. Observation, coordination, adaptability - these are the marks of true potential. Lui Yan, Yan Mei, your understanding of qi and patterns is commendable. Use it well, for the trials ahead will demand more."

Lui Yan's chest swelled with quiet satisfaction. He had not just survived - he had thrived. But he knew this was only the beginning.

At the edge of the courtyard, Su Qingxue stepped down silently, approaching him. Her expression remained calm, but her eyes held a faint spark.

"You are evolving faster than I anticipated," she said softly. "Keep this pace, and you may truly rival the strongest among the Outer Sect."

Lui Yan inclined his head. "Thank you. I will continue to learn."

As the disciples were dismissed, Lui Yan glanced at the distant peaks, imagining the Inner Sect halls, the secret libraries, the challenges waiting beyond. Each trial, each formation, each test - it was all preparing him for something greater.

And he was ready.
