Chapter 14 - Birthday Of Ash Zen

Black Hell's Red District Arc

The world was divided into five great dynasties, each ruled by a Dark Lord whose authority shaped not only land and people, but destiny itself. Their banners flew over cities built on blood, fear, and ambition. Above them all existed the Celestial Dominion, distant and untouchable, watching the mortal realm from beyond the veil, neither fully present nor entirely absent.

And yet—

The world did not fall into chaos.

For there existed the Zenin.

The absolute ruler.

The unseen pillar holding the world together.

To preserve balance, the Zenin created the Guardians—warriors forged not merely by strength, but by responsibility. They were humanity's shield, standing between order and annihilation. Each Guardian bore a rank, a measure of power and the weight of the lives they were expected to protect… or sacrifice.

From the lowest Shonen, to Kohai, Zetsu, Shura, Kuroba, and the feared Shingan, each rank marked how close one stood to the abyss of true power. Beyond them moved the Shadow Veil, guardians who worked directly under the Zenin—knights of silence who erased threats before the world ever learned their names.

At the summit stood those who had to choose—

To become a Dark Lord, ruling a dynasty through fear and authority…

Or a Captain of the Knights of Guardians, protecting the world.

And above all ranks, beyond all titles, stood only one.

The Zenin.

Ruler. Protector. Judge of the entire world.

This is the story of a boy who lived beneath that system without ever truly belonging to it.

A boy whose memories were sealed.

A boy who grew up never knowing his parents' faces, their voices, or their warmth.

His only wish was painfully simple—

To see them once.

Even if it was only before death claimed him.

Nine Years Later

The sun sank slowly behind jagged mountains, staining the sky in deep crimson and fading gold. Long shadows stretched across Zenin City, crawling along stone streets like living things. Even the air felt heavy, as if the world itself were holding its breath.

Kaizen walked at the front, his posture straight, his presence calm and immovable—an unyielding pillar. Behind him followed Kai and Alain, their armor still marked with faint scratches and dried blood from the mission. Ash walked slightly behind, his footsteps quieter, lighter, as though he did not fully belong to the path beneath his feet.

At the city gates, Kaizen stopped.

"That's all for today," he said evenly.

"You can all go home."

Kai exhaled sharply and stretched. "Finally. I thought this mission would never end."

Alain laughed and waved. "Later, Sensei. Later, Ash."

Their voices faded into the maze of streets.

Ash remained.

Kaizen did not turn, yet he spoke again.

"Ash."

Ash stiffened. "What is it?"

Kaizen glanced back. His sharp eyes carried a strange weight—something unreadable, something ancient.

"You remember what tomorrow is… right?"

Ash's chest tightened.

For a brief moment, memories tried to surface—shattered images, blurred faces, fragments of voices just beyond reach. They slipped through his grasp like smoke through open fingers.

"…Yes," he whispered.

He hesitated.

"Hey, Sensei…"

"Hm?"

Ash clenched his fists.

"Why… why do you know everything about me… while I don't know anything about myself?"

Silence.

"All I have are broken memories," Ash continued, his voice trembling.

"Faces without names. Voices without warmth. Why is that?"

Kaizen turned away.

"Don't cling to the past," he said.

"Live in the present. Build a future worth remembering. And do only what you won't regret."

Then he walked on.

His footsteps echoed sharply against stone.

"I know!" Ash shouted.

Kaizen stopped—but did not turn.

"I know you were there!" Ash's voice cracked.

"With my parents! You always were!"

Silence answered him.

"You never explain anything," Ash continued, grief and anger bleeding together.

"That's why… that's why Rein—big brother—died!"

Kaizen stood still for a moment longer.

Then he resumed walking.

He never looked back.

Ash stood alone, his words hanging in the air like a curse.

The city felt colder than before.

Ash wandered without direction.

Narrow streets gave way to dim alleyways, until laughter stopped him.

A child stood between his parents, laughing brightly. A small cake rested on a table, candles flickering weakly in the evening light.

A birthday.

Ash's breath caught.

If only… if they hadn't died…

I could have celebrated my birthday with them too.

The thought hollowed his chest.

He turned away and walked toward the forest.

The deeper he went, the darker the world became. Trees loomed like silent judges. Night swallowed the path behind him.

Ash fell to his knees beneath the branches.

His shoulders shook.

Tears fell freely, soaking into the cold earth.

The forest did not comfort him.

It only watched.

One day, he thought, this black world will answer me.

A soft crunch of footsteps echoed behind him.

"Welcome back, big bro!"

Ash looked up, startled.

Star stood there, smiling brightly—as if darkness itself had no meaning.

"Hey… Star," he said softly. "It's been a while."

"How was your mission?" she asked eagerly.

"You really love hearing about missions."

"Of course!" she grinned.

"I can't wait to turn thirteen and start going on missions too!"

"…You're still only eleven."

Her presence warmed him in ways he didn't fully understand.

If it weren't for Star… I might already be ready to destroy this world.

"Oh, Ash. You're back."

Rin's calm voice followed.

"Yeah… sis."

"How are Kaizen and the others?"

"They're fine," Ash replied. "All of them."

The next day dawned cold and gray.

"Happy Birthday, Ash!"

Ash froze. "…How do you know it's my birthday?"

"That's none of your business," Alain said with a grin. "Just enjoy it."

"So," Kai added, "wanna hang out?"

"No," Ash replied. "I have somewhere to go."

Alain smirked. "Ooooh—is it a girl?"

"What are you idiots saying?" Ash muttered as he walked away.

The wind cut sharply through the trees. Birds cried. Crickets echoed.

Ash stopped beneath a tall, dark tree and stared at the sky.

Tears fell quietly.

One day… I'll carve my own path through this darkness.

"Are you free?"

Ash blinked. "N—no—yes—I mean…"

"That means yes," Serena said, grabbing his hand.

"W-wait—!"

The day passed like a dream:

Shopping. Movies. Games. Laughter—warm, unfamiliar, fragile.

At sunset—

"Why did you spend today with me?" Ash asked.

"I just felt like I should spend time with someone I love," Serena said softly.

"Before it's too late."

She ran before he could answer.

Ash stood still.

"She's… really cute."

He looked up at the sky.

"…This was the best birthday I've had since I lost my memories."

Deep inside—

A whisper stirred.

A seed of vengeance.

A path bathed in shadow.

One day… Kuro no Sekai will kneel before me.

Night had swallowed the corridors of the Rin Kurogane residence, leaving only the distant hum of the city outside.

Ash walked slowly, hands deep in his pockets, shoulders hunched slightly. His cheeks burned for reasons he refused to name, and the quiet only made the thoughts louder.

…Why am I still thinking about her?

The thought clawed at him, unrelenting. She was just… too cute.

He shook his head violently, as if trying to expel the memory. Focus. Missions. Training. Control. That had always been his life. And yet, even now, his mind wandered to something soft, fleeting… something he didn't deserve.

When he reached his room, he slid the door open—and the darkness inside exploded into light.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!"

Ash froze. His heart stuttered. For a moment, the world seemed to tilt sideways, uncertain, fragile.

Kai and Alain grinned like idiots. Kaizen stood with his arms crossed, as composed as ever. Rin smiled gently. Star practically vibrated with excitement.

"…W—What…?" Ash whispered.

"Surprise!" Kai shouted, throwing his arms wide.

Alain laughed, shaking his head. "You look like you've seen a ghost!"

Ash's eyes darted around the room, searching. Traps? Missions? Hidden agendas? Nothing.

"No… no traps," he whispered to himself.

"You guys… Kai, Alain… Sensei Kaizen… Rin sis?!" His voice cracked slightly.

Rin stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Come on, Ash. Just enjoy it."

Ash looked at each face, each smile. His chest tightened, a warmth he hadn't felt in years pressing against his ribs.

Star bounced on the balls of her feet, eyes shining. "Happy Birthday, Ash! Make a wish!"

For a brief, fragile moment, time slowed. The flickering candlelight, the faint scent of cake, the laughter—it all wrapped around him like something from another world.

…This is what life could feel like.

Ash swallowed, fighting to hold back a rare smile.

"…Okay," he said quietly. "Thank you."

A warmth filled the room, delicate and unsteady, as if the universe itself had granted him a fleeting reprieve from the harshness of his life. For the first time in so long, he allowed himself to breathe. To live.

And then—the door slammed open.

A Guardian stumbled inside, gasping for air. He leaned close to Kaizen, whispering something urgent. Kaizen's expression shifted instantly, his jaw tightening.

Ash froze.

Something had come.

Something that would not wait for birthdays.

The candlelight flickered violently. Shadows crawled across the walls.

Ash's heart pounded.

And in that moment, he realized—this fragile peace, this tiny warmth, had already ended.

And there was no turning back.
