Chapter 15 - Beneath the Silent Moon

Kaizen's expression shifted instantly.

The fleeting warmth Ash had just begun to believe in—however fragile, however brief—vanished as if it had never existed. Kaizen's eyes hardened, the air around him tightening, and the room seemed to grow colder with every passing second.

"…I'm sorry," Kaizen murmured.

His voice was low, restrained, almost fragile—but that only made it heavier.

The world froze.

Silence pressed in from all sides, thick and suffocating, as though even the walls were holding their breath. Ash felt it settle on his shoulders like an unseen weight.

"Ash. Kai. Alain." Kaizen spoke each name slowly, deliberately, his words cutting cleanly through the stillness. "Emergency mission. We leave now."

Star's hands clenched at her sides, trembling despite her effort to stay composed. "Now?! But it's—"

"I'm sorry, Star," Ash said softly before she could finish.

His voice carried more than an apology—it carried regret. His gaze lingered on her for a heartbeat too long, as if he could burn the moment into his memory. He wanted to stay. Just one more moment. Just one breath longer. If he could pause time here, hold on to this warmth, maybe things would be different.

But duty did not wait.

He turned away.

Star said nothing. Her lips pressed together, her silence louder than any protest. The disappointment in her eyes cut deeper than any blade Ash had ever faced. He swallowed hard, forcing himself forward. With each step away from her, the warmth he had glimpsed faded, replaced by the familiar chill of responsibility.

So this is how it always is.

Kai's jaw tightened, his hands curling into fists. "Sensei… we can't just leave her standing there!" His voice cracked—not with defiance, but with helplessness. Fear clung to his words, an unspoken warning of dangers yet unseen.

Alain's fists flexed tightly at his sides, tension radiating off him like heat. "This… this isn't right. Why now? Why like this?" His eyes flicked between Ash and Kaizen, torn between obedience and the instinct to protect what little peace they had.

Ash glanced back at them, his eyes saying what his voice could not.

We don't have a choice.

Without another word, they followed Kaizen into the cold night. The gates closed behind them with a hollow echo, and the crunch of leaves beneath their feet became a harsh metronome, marking the passage of stolen time.

Running Through the Forest

The forest welcomed them with silence.

A vast stretch of ancient trees rose on either side, their branches weaving together high above to form a natural canopy. Pale moonlight filtered through the leaves, scattering silver across the forest floor. A full moon hung peacefully in the sky, serene and distant, as if unaware of the tension running beneath it.

Mist clung low to the ground, drifting lazily between roots and stones, giving the forest an almost dreamlike calm. The night air was cool and clean, scented with pine and damp earth. Somewhere far away, an owl called softly.

They ran.

Branches snapped beneath their feet, leaves brushed against their arms and faces, yet the forest itself remained strangely gentle—as if guiding them forward rather than resisting. Ash's breath stayed steady, but his chest felt tight, not from exertion, but from the ache pressing against his heart.

The warmth he had briefly known was already gone, swallowed by the night.

"What happened?!" Kai's voice cut through the stillness. There was anger in it, yes—but also fear, disbelief, and the pain of leaving something precious behind.

Alain's voice followed, raw and strained. "What could be more important than this?!" He reached out instinctively, as if he could grab hold of the night itself and force it to stop.

Kaizen didn't slow. "I don't know yet," he replied evenly. "Lord Zenith Zeki will explain."

Ash's breaths came in quiet, controlled rhythms. Images flickered through his mind—warm light, soft shadows, Star's disappointed gaze. Every heartbeat reminded him of what he had lost, even if only for a moment.

I can't hold onto it. Not now. Not ever.

But I wish…

The forest deepened around them. Shadows stretched long and fluid, curling around tree trunks like watching eyes. The moon followed them faithfully through breaks in the canopy, its calm glow at odds with the fate pulling them forward.

Each step felt like a step farther away from something Ash could never have again.

Darklord Office

The office was suffocating.

Even before a word was spoken, the weight of anticipation filled the room. The walls seemed to lean inward, the air thick with authority and secrets long buried.

"Oh, you all came quickly. Good."

Zenith Zeki sat calmly, his voice sharp despite its composed tone. His presence alone commanded silence.

"Hurry and prepare yourselves," he continued. "You're heading to the Black Dynasty."

"Explain first," Kaizen demanded, stepping forward. His fists clenched, restraint barely holding.

Zenith sighed, a flicker of annoyance passing across his face. "I sent Team-6 on a mission."

Alain stiffened. "…Kaito's team?"

"For reasons I cannot reveal," Zenith said smoothly, "they entered the Black Dynasty. And then…" He paused, eyes glinting faintly. "…they ended up in Black Hell."

Silence fell like a shroud.

"…Black Hell?" Alain whispered, his voice trembling despite himself.

Zenith blinked, as though realizing his mistake. A faint, dangerous smile curved his lips. "Oh—did I say that out loud? My mistake. I meant… they disappeared."

Kaizen's fist clenched until his knuckles whitened. "So Kaito is in danger."

Ash's chest tightened sharply.

No… Serena…

"You're dismissed," Zenith said, voice final. "Move fast."

Forest — On the Way

The cold of the night seeped deeper into Ash's bones as they ran once more beneath the moonlit canopy. It wasn't just the chill—it was the absence of warmth, the echo of what had been left behind.

"Sensei… why would Lord Zenith send us?" Kai asked quietly, his voice trembling despite his effort to stay strong. "He has guardians far stronger than us."

"…I don't know," Kaizen replied, slowing his pace slightly. His expression remained unreadable.

Alain hesitated, eyes scanning the mist-wrapped forest. "What exactly is Black Hell?"

Kaizen's gaze darkened. "An ancient kingdom," he said softly. "Ruled long ago by the former ruler… the First Zenin."

Ash swallowed. "…So you're saying the First Zenin was a demon?"

Kaizen did not answer.

The forest seemed to listen. Leaves rustled without wind, branches swayed as if whispering secrets. Silence settled over them again—heavy, endless.

The path stretched on.

Ash ran in silence, the full moon casting his shadow long and thin across the forest floor. So this is my path, he thought. Every time I reach for something… it's taken away.

---

Alain's thoughts raced as they moved.

Black Hell…

The name felt wrong. Ancient. Forbidden.

Kai finally broke the silence. "But why would Lord Zenith even mention that name…?"

"…Don't know," Kaizen replied.

Alain faltered for half a heartbeat. "Then where is it now? Black Hell?"

"I don't know," Kaizen said. "But legends say it was destroyed by the Second Zenin—Zenin Zen."

"Destroyed…?"

"Yes. But why the sudden interest in it?"

"No… it's just—"

Ash stopped abruptly. "Wait."

The mist ahead shifted unnaturally.

"Someone's there."

Figures emerged.

"Taro Ito… and the Scarlet Oath," Kaizen muttered.

Shock rippled through the group.

Taro stepped forward, darkness clinging to him like a second skin. "Isn't this Kaizen Ryujin… son of Kaze Ryujin. And still walking the path of a Shingan."

"What do you want?" Kaizen asked.

"Nothing," Taro smiled thinly. "I just want to kill you."

Steel flashed. Sparks danced.

"So promise me this," Taro whispered. "Next time… one of us will die."

Kaizen turned away. "For now—we move."

"Crimson Knights…?" Kai whispered later, stunned.

Kaizen gave a faint smile—not one of amusement, but of something far older.

"Taro won't kill me," he said quietly. "He's… just a kind person."

Kai came to an abrupt stop, disbelief flashing across his face.

"Kind?" he snapped. "How the heck is he kind?! He literally said he wants to kill you!"

For a moment, Kaizen didn't answer. Moonlight brushed his face, revealing a shadow of memory in his eyes.

"That's exactly why," he finally replied. "But this isn't the place for that story."

He turned his gaze back to the path ahead, where the forest stretched endlessly beneath the silver glow of the full moon.

"I'll tell you a story on our way."

Without waiting for another word, Kaizen resumed moving. The others followed instinctively, confusion and unease trailing behind them as the forest swallowed their footsteps once more.

Black Hell waited

Somewhere Else — Final Thoughts

High above Zenin City, where the wind roared freely and the world below seemed distant and fragile, a lone figure stood.

A man wearing a mask.

He stood atop a towering structure, overlooking the entire city—its lantern-lit streets, quiet homes, and sleeping lives spread out beneath him like a delicate illusion. The full moon hung high in the sky, silver light bathing Zenin City in an almost unreal peace.

The wind pulled at his cloak, whispering through the night, but he did not move.

So… today is his birthday, he thought.

His fingers curled slowly into a fist.

I should have been there.

His gaze lingered over the city, resting on a place he could not see, yet felt with painful clarity.

I wish I could've celebrated it with him.

The wind intensified, carrying distant echoes of life below—faint laughter, fading footsteps—before dissolving into silence.

But it can't be helped.

He turned slightly toward the darkness behind him, his voice lowering, almost breaking.

I must do as Zen ordered… for the sake of the whole world.

A pause.

His grip tightened.

…Including him..
