The rumor arrived before the confirmation.

Two major territories east of Stonecliff had entered open conflict over mineral routes buried beneath disputed borderlands. Trade halted. Envoys withdrawn. Armed patrols reported.

Not a skirmish.

A mobilization.

The exchange received the first inquiry at dawn.

Request for neutral documentation observers.

Proposal for cross territory humanitarian corridor.

Cassian transmitted the alert across channels without commentary.

Lucien read it twice.

"They want legitimacy," he said quietly.

"Yes," I replied from the ridge where I now stood more often than within the basin.

"They want witnesses," Cassian added.

"Or cover," Lucien muttered.

The difference mattered.

War had a gravity unlike crisis.

It pulled systems toward sides.

Toward allegiance.

Toward narratives of righteousness.

The exchange had been forged in resisting central authority, not mediating armed conflict between equal powers.
