When Mercy Refused to Disappear

The world did not explode.

That surprised everyone.

After the healer's name appeared on the ledger, many expected fury. Others expected retreat. Some predicted violence disguised as outrage. What arrived instead was something far more dangerous.

Debate.

It spread faster than fear ever could.

By morning, the basin was filled with messages. Not demands. Questions. Not accusations. Stories.

Healers from distant territories wrote of moments they had crossed lines quietly. Scouts confessed to decisions made without orders to prevent bloodshed. Betas admitted to choosing people over protocol and hoping no one would ever know.

Now they knew.

And they were asking whether that knowledge would destroy them.

Cassian stood amid the stacks of records, eyes tired but sharp. "This has become participatory."

"Yes," I replied. "They are no longer asking permission. They are asking meaning."
