Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight - In sync

Without their smartphones—

time changed.

No scrolling.

No numbers.

Just movement.

Just voices.

Just them.

The only things they were allowed to keep—

simple mobile phones.

Calls only.

And somehow—

that made everything feel more real.

The New Routine

"Again."

The music restarted.

Bass filled the room, heavy and demanding.

Bella stumbled into position.

"Wait—WAIT—"

Too late.

Joanne stopped the track.

"Focus."

"I am focusing," Bella shot back. "My body just isn't cooperating."

"That's because you're thinking," Leah said. "Not listening."

Bella turned. "And what does that even mean?"

Leah stepped forward.

"Follow me."

Leah Leads

"Five, six, seven—"

Leah moved first.

Sharp.

Clean.

Effortless in a way that didn't feel like showing off—just understanding.

"Don't rush the second step," she said mid-move. "You're ahead of the beat."

Susu adjusted instantly.

Mili mirrored her.

Joanne aligned without a word.

Bella—

"…why are your legs smarter than mine??"

Leah didn't miss a beat. "Practice."

Bella groaned. "I knew you were going to say that."

Break — Barely

They dropped to the floor.

Breathing heavy.

Sweat clinging.

Susu lay flat. "If I don't move, I might survive."

Mili sat beside her, tucking her legs in.

Bella pointed at Leah. "You don't get tired, do you?"

"I do," Leah said.

"You just hide it," Joanne added.

Leah didn't deny it.

But she sat down this time.

Closer to them.

Late Nights

Practice didn't stop when it got dark.

If anything—

it got sharper.

"Again," Joanne said.

Bella groaned. "You and Leah are the same person."

"We're not," Leah said.

"Worse," Bella muttered, standing anyway.

They ran it again.

Mistakes.

Corrections.

Breath.

Movement.

Again.

The First Perfect Run

It happened suddenly.

No warning.

Just—

everything aligned.

The beat hit.

They moved.

Together.

Clean.

Exact.

The final pose landed.

Silence.

Then—

Bella screamed.

"THAT WAS IT."

Susu laughed, breathless. "We did it…"

Mili's eyes lit up. "We really did…"

Joanne nodded, satisfied.

Leah stood still for a moment—

then smiled.

Bright.

Unfiltered.

"Again," she said.

Bella collapsed. "You're actually not normal."

Outside — A Different World

"Food," Susu said.

"Yes," Bella agreed instantly.

They left the building—

no one checking phones.

No one distracted.

Just walking.

Mili's Camera

Before they entered the restaurant—

Mili paused.

From her bag—

she pulled out a small camera.

Not her phone.

Something simpler.

Something real.

Bella gasped. "Since when did you have that??"

Mili smiled shyly. "I've always liked taking pictures…"

Susu leaned in. "Can I see?"

"Later," Mili said. "I want to capture things first."

Leah watched her quietly.

"…that's nice," she said.

Mili blinked, surprised.

Then smiled wider.

The Restaurant

Warm lights.

Plastic chairs.

Quiet comfort.

Mili lifted the camera.

Click.

Bella mid-sentence.

Click.

Susu laughing softly.

Click.

Joanne pouring water like it was a routine she'd always known.

She hesitated—

then lifted the camera again.

Leah—

sitting back, watching them.

Relaxed.

Smiling slightly.

Click.

Leah noticed.

"What was that?"

Mili lowered the camera quickly. "Nothing—just… memories."

Leah looked at her for a second longer.

Then—

"…take another one."

Mili blinked.

"You don't mind?"

Leah shook her head slightly.

"No."

So she did.

Laughter Feels Easier

Bella tried to copy Leah's dance move again.

Still wrong.

Susu laughed harder this time.

Joanne shook her head.

Mili captured it.

Click.

Leah stood up, demonstrating again.

Bella failed again.

Everyone laughed—

including Leah.

And this time—

Mili didn't hesitate.

Click.

Small, Quiet Things

Susu added food to Mili's plate.

"Eat."

Mili sighed—but smiled.

Joanne handed Bella a napkin before she asked.

Leah poured water into everyone's cups.

No one said anything about it.

But they noticed.

Mili lifted the camera one more time.

Click.

Walking Back

Cool air.

Soft footsteps.

Bella talking endlessly.

Susu and Mili side by side.

Joanne just behind them.

Leah—

in the middle.

Not distant.

Not separate.

With them.

Mili stopped once.

Turned.

Click.

A blurry photo.

All of them mid-motion.

Laughing.

Real.

Something Changed

"Hey," Mili said softly.

Leah looked at her.

"You're smiling more."

Leah blinked.

"…am I?"

Susu nodded.

Bella turned around. "It's weird. But we accept it."

Joanne added quietly, "It suits you."

Leah looked at all of them.

And this time—

she didn't hold back.

She smiled.

Fully.

"…okay."

Mili lifted the camera one last time.

This one—

she didn't tell them about.

Click.

End

No rankings.

No noise.

Just late nights.

Warm food.

Laughter.

And small moments—

captured not for the world—

but for themselves.

And somewhere between choreography and quiet pictures—

ROSIES weren't just learning how to perform.

They were learning how to belong.
