Chapter 391: The Millennial Cataclysm
Tobitake Tonbo listened as the Great Toad Sage spoke, spanning the ages from the era of Hagoromo to the modern day. He spoke of the Children of Destiny from the past and specific events that occurred within their fates.
The Sage was old, after all, and couldn't remember every single detail perfectly.
"In the future, there will be one final path of fate, and it will be the last time I prophesy a Child of Destiny."
As the Great Toad Sage spoke, he revealed a vital piece of information.
"The future fate?" Tonbo asked. One more path of fate—is he talking about the Boruto era?
"Mm. This is something I foresaw a thousand years ago," the Great Toad Sage said. "At that time, to deal with this 'Millennial Cataclysm,' Hagoromo chose to divide his own power. Using Yin-Yang Release, he created the Sharingan of the Uchiha clan and passed it down to his son, Indra, hoping that Indra would preserve this bloodline limit."
"Huh? The Sharingan was Hagoromo's doing?"
Tonbo knew the eyes belonged to the Sage of Six Paths' son, but he had no idea the Sharingan was specifically engineered for a purpose. He was a bit bewildered. Was the anime I watched all wrong? Shouldn't it be that Hagoromo's power couldn't be fully inherited through blood, causing it to degenerate?
"No, this was a trump card Hagoromo left for the Shinobi world. The Sharingan is the 'eye that reflects the heart.' If the world is on the brink of collapse and the host of the Sharingan is subjected to extreme stimulus, there is a chance the eyes will evolve capabilities to counter the threat. However, this probability only serves to increase the success rate of surviving the Millennial Cataclysm. Regarding the specific future of this catastrophe, my prophetic dreams have provided no confirmed hints. I only know it is the final disaster. Once it passes, the world will enter a state of true tranquility, and a Child of the World will appear to shoulder the responsibility of saving existence."
The Great Toad Sage explained his precognitive abilities in detail, unveiling an ancient secret.
I knew the evolutionary mechanism of the Sharingan felt much better designed than the Rinnegan's. So it was the Sage of Six Paths' hidden hand. This future sight... I definitely have to guard against it. It's like doing business right under someone's nose!
Tonbo was deeply shaken. Damn. The Great Toad Sage's prophecy was too accurate. The future Child of the World had to be Boruto. Or maybe not—it could be Mitsuki or Sarada. Or perhaps the Child of the World wasn't just one person.
As a mature ninja, Tonbo maintained a healthy level of skepticism toward intelligence. He even wondered if the Great Toad Sage was hiding something or if he was the true mastermind behind everything. He had read too many web novels; his mind was wandering.
However, the power of the Sharingan was indeed exactly as the Great Toad Sage described. Orochimaru's research data on the Sharingan aligned perfectly with this.
"Regarding this future cataclysm, can the Three Great Sage Regions cooperate with us?" Tonbo asked.
He had already obtained the intelligence regarding future sight. Now, the most important thing was this "Millennial Cataclysm" mentioned by the Sage. He wanted more information—specifically, whether the Sage Regions had made preparations for this disaster.
"We have, but with little effect. We can only enhance our own strength. Some abilities are useless against the so-called future disaster. It seems the opponent's power blocks my future sight and the current telepathic wave abilities of the Ryuchi Cave. All we can do now is strengthen ourselves and provide support for the future," the Great Toad Sage said slowly.
Even with the power of the Sages of the Three Great Regions, they could only detect fragments. However, all three regions were prepared. Once a threat to the Shinobi world appeared, they would unite with the ninja to eliminate it. This was why they offered summoning contracts to the ninja in the first place. They had no inherent obligation to help; they simply wanted to form an alliance through these contracts. But this was a secret known only to the Sages of the Three Great Regions.
"I see. Thank you for your guidance, Great Toad Sage," Tonbo said.
His plans for the future shifted once again. In short, the more information they had, the better they could prepare.
"You seem to know something about the future as well, which is why you came to consult me, isn't it? The power of the Three Great Sage Regions cannot resolve the future cataclysm. Ultimately, it depends on the strength of you ninja. You need to bolster your power. We can only offer some assistance," the Sage noted.
Tonbo replied: "Understood. We will all work hard. The enemy's abilities are indeed preposterous, but the side of victory will surely be ours."
He believed this firmly. So what if they're Otsutsuki? So what if it's an omniscient god? Whatever ability they had, he would solve it. He would never allow his life to be destroyed. He was still young and didn't want to die yet. He was only in his thirties; with his current body, he could live for two or three hundred years even without further modifications. If he used certain ninjutsu like Earth Grudge Fear or Reanimation, he could live indefinitely. He hadn't even explored everything in the Shinobi world yet. He had only been to over two hundred countries; there were still so many customs he hadn't seen.
"Let us hope so. If anything happens, you can notify me. Do you need a summoning contract for Mount Myoboku? You can sign one now so you can come here to discuss things anytime," Gamamaru offered. His speech was slow, but his intent was firm.
"No need. I'll just leave a coordinate here so I can come back whenever."
Tonbo placed a Flying Raijin mark on a nearby pillar. Mount Myoboku and the Shinobi world were actually in the same dimension, not a separate pocket dimension, so the Flying Raijin worked. It was more convenient than a summoning contract.
"Goodbye, Great Toad Sage. I'll come visit when I have time." After thanking him, Tonbo slowly walked out of the hall.
"Mm... who was that just now?" The Great Toad Sage tilted his head, already forgetting the man's name.
"Hey, what are you guys doing?"
Walking out of the gates, Tonbo saw Naruto and Hinata playing with something. As he got closer, he saw it was a massive plate of insects.
"Naruto hasn't had Mount Myoboku specialties in a long time, so I brought some for him to try. Do you want some, Tonbo-sensei?"
Gamakichi, in awe of Tonbo's prowess during the Fourth War, offered the plate of wriggling pupae to him. They were still moving. Naruto and Hinata's faces were currently pale. It made sense—given Gamakichi's size, the sheer volume of insects was staggering.
Tonbo looked at the insects right in front of him. He could sense the rich nutrients within them. No wonder the toads here grew so large.
"No thanks. Just show me around the Toad Kingdom. I've been to many countries, but I've never seen a nation composed entirely of toads."
Tonbo rejected the offer immediately. He was a human, not a toad.
