Chapter 104 - Close-Quarters Equation

The tunnel narrowed further.

Concrete walls pressed in on both sides. Flickering lights cast uneven shadows across the passage, turning every movement into something distorted.

Uncertain.

Aiden stood still for a moment.

Listening.

Behind him—

The faint hum of drones.

Closer.

"…good."

He exhaled slowly.

"Come to me."

The first drone entered the narrow corridor.

Then another.

Then three more behind it.

Their movements were slower now.

Restricted.

Careful.

[ENVIRONMENT: CONSTRAINED]

[ADAPTATION IN PROGRESS]

Aiden rolled his shoulders.

"…let's see how you handle this."

The first drone fired.

Aiden stepped forward Not away.

The beam grazed past his shoulder—

Too tight for wide-angle correction.

He closed the distance instantly—

CRACK.

His fist shattered the drone's core.

Fragments scattered across the floor.

The second drone fired Aiden twisted—

The beam struck the wall—

Sparks exploded—

He grabbed the drone mid-motion—

Slammed it into the concrete—

BOOM.

Two down.

The rest paused.

Not hesitation.

Recalculation.

[CLOSE-RANGE COMBAT MODEL: INITIALIZING]

Aiden smirked.

"…about time."

Back at the resistance base—

The engineer pointed at the screen.

"They're switching combat modes!"

Hana leaned closer.

"…close-quarters prediction."

Another feed popped up.

"They're adapting to confined space engagement!"

On the battlefield—

The drones changed formation.

Tighter.

More precise.

No wasted movement.

The next one didn't fire immediately.

It waited.

Watching Aiden's stance.

Analyzing his breathing.

Predicting his next move.

Aiden noticed.

"…you're learning fast."

The drone moved.

Not shooting.

Closing distance.

Aiden stepped forward, The drone reacted instantly A beam fired point-blank Aiden tilted slightly The beam missed by inches He struck But, The drone shifted mid-impact His fist scraped past it.

"…oh?"

The drone countered.

A short-range blast Aiden blocked, The impact pushed him back a step.

"…you can fight now."

The rest of the drones advanced.

Not overwhelming him.

Engaging him.

One by one.

Testing.

Learning.

Adapting.

Aiden's eyes sharpened.

"…fine."

He stepped forward again.

Energy flickered around him.

Controlled.

But barely.

The next exchange was faster.

The drone struck Aiden dodged Another attacked from the side He twisted Barely avoided it A third came from behind He ducked—

But—

A beam clipped his shoulder.

"…tch."

Too tight.

Too precise.

They were learning faster in close range.

[ADAPTATION RATE: ACCELERATED]

Aiden stepped back slightly.

Breathing heavier.

"…can't drag this out."

The tunnel wasn't an advantage anymore.

It was becoming neutral.

Soon It would be their advantage.

Aiden clenched his fist.

Energy surged again.

Stronger.

Closer.

The air around him distorted.

The drones froze for a fraction of a second.

[UNKNOWN VARIABLE DETECTED]

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"…just a little."

He stepped forward.

This time Everything shifted.

Not fully.

But enough.

The next drone attacked Aiden moved And for a split second He wasn't where it expected him to be.

He slipped past it—

Struck—

BOOM.

The drone shattered instantly.

The others reacted—

But slower.

[ERROR ACCUMULATION DETECTED]

Aiden moved again Faster.

Sharper.

Not losing control But pushing the edge.

Another drone fell.

Then another.

The tunnel filled with sparks and debris.

Aiden stopped.

Breathing heavy.

Only one drone remained.

It hovered in place.

Not attacking.

Analyzing.

[MODEL RESTRUCTURING]

Aiden wiped blood from his lip.

"…you're different."

The drone adjusted its position.

More precise.

More calculated.

A preview of something worse.

Aiden stepped forward.

"…good."

The drone fired Aiden moved But this time It predicted him.

The beam met him halfway—

BOOM.

Aiden was thrown back Crashing into the tunnel wall.

The impact cracked the concrete.

He dropped to one knee.

"…yeah."

He coughed slightly.

"…there it is."

The drones weren't just catching up.

They were evolving mid-fight.

Just like Final Constant.

Aiden pushed himself up slowly.

Energy flickered again.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

But closer than ever.

"…one more."

The final drone hovered.

Waiting.

Calculating.

Both sides At the edge of something new.
