Kevin's frantic sobbing eventually softened. His grief didn't disappear, but he forced himself to rein it in. As he drew in uneven breaths, his shoulders still trembled.
The forest was no longer as loud as when the battle was still ongoing. It echoed with the remnants of his crying. His raw sorrow was enough to make anyone else's heart ache.
Lucille, Ashrik, and Isaac still stayed where they were. Neither of them said a word. At a time like this, Kevin didn't need any empty words of consolation.
At last, Kevin lifted a trembling hand to wipe his face. His simple action had smeared dirt and tears together. His eyes were red and swollen, but clearer than before.
"Haa..."
Kevin inhaled deeply, trying to steady himself. He was still cradling his brother, now lifeless. His bloodshot eyes searched for Ashrik.
"...thank you," he said hoarsely, voice barely a whisper. He clenched his hands on his brother's torn shirt.
