Scarlett Aurora Whitmore came to New York City with big dreams of becoming an artist. Armed with the address of an agency given to her by her stepsister, she left her hometown without knowing that the address was fake and the agency was known as a place full of traps. Her first day in the capital turns into a nightmare when Scarlett falls victim to a pickpocket and loses everything.

Scarlett woke before the sun fully rose, her eyes opening to the faint gray light filtering through the curtains. For a moment, she stayed still, staring at the ceiling, her mind replaying everything that had happened the night before.

Scarlett exhaled slowly and pushed herself up. She could not afford to dwell on it. Not now. Not when everything around her demanded focus, control, and precision.


"Miss Scarlett, are you awake?" Amanda's voice followed.


Amanda stepped inside with her usual bright energy, though she paused the moment she saw Scarlett's expression.


"Whoa. That face," Amanda said, placing a tray of breakfast on the table. "Either you did not sleep, or something very dramatic happened last night."
