Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven: Terms and Conditions

Jason noticed before I said anything.

I could tell by the way his eyes lingered longer than usual when I walked into class. Not intense—more observant. Like he was recalculating something he thought he already understood.

I wasn't avoiding him. I wasn't chasing him either.

I was different.

And he knew it.

By the end of the day, he found me by my locker. Leaning casually against the metal, hands in his pockets, confidence still there—but quieter now.

"You've been kind of… distant," he said.

I blinked. "Have I?"

"Yeah," he replied easily. "Not in a mad way. Just… not here." He tapped the side of his head.

I hesitated. My instinct was to deflect, joke, change the subject. That was my pattern. Keep things light so nothing could get heavy.

But Simon's voice echoed in my head.

Margins feel safer than saying things out loud.

I exhaled slowly. "I think I just realized something."

Jason straightened slightly. "Okay."

"I don't like feeling like I'm being pulled," I said carefully. "By anyone. Even when it's not intentional."

He frowned—not defensive. Thinking.

"I don't want to be someone's option," I continued, "but I also don't want to feel like I'm competing with people I didn't agree to compete with."

There it was.

Jason nodded once. "That's fair."

I looked up at him, surprised. "It is?"

"Yeah," he said. "I won't pretend I'm… subtle. I like attention. I'm not great at reading when I'm crossing lines."

"That's what scares me," I admitted quietly. "I move a lot. I don't do well with things that feel overwhelming."

He studied me for a moment, then said, "If I told you I could slow down… would you believe me?"

I didn't answer right away.

"I'm not saying I'll suddenly turn into someone else," he added. "But I can listen. I can stop assuming. I can stop acting like confidence is the same thing as control."

That landed harder than I expected.

"You don't have to change for me," I said.

"I know," he replied. "But I can change how I show up."

We stood there, the hallway buzzing around us.

Then he smiled—smaller than usual. "Can I ask you something without it meaning anything?"

I raised an eyebrow. "That depends."

"There's a fall fair this weekend," he said. "Food trucks. Music. Games. I was thinking of going."

My heart skipped—not because of the fair, but because of the way he said it. Casual. Open-ended.

"Okay," I said.

"If you wanted to come," he continued, "you could. With me. Or with friends. Or just… meet up there. No labels."

I searched his face. There was no pressure there. No claim.

Just an invitation.

"That sounds… fun," I said slowly.

His smile returned—but softer now. "Cool. Then we'll call it a hangout."

A hangout.

But the way he looked at me said something else entirely.

As I walked home later, my phone buzzed.

Jason: I'll text you details later this week. No rush.

I stared at the screen longer than I should have.

Simon's quiet steadiness.

Ben's warmth.

Jason's promise.

Three different ways of wanting me.

And now—an offer I hadn't expected.

I slipped my phone into my pocket, my heart beating a little faster.

Because whatever happened at that fair…

Something was going to change.
