The Vampire loomed over Lily's unconscious form, a jagged, blood-stained grin stretching across his face. He raised his foot, the air around it shimmering with concentrated gravity.
"GOODBYE, PRINCESS!"
He began to stomp down, but he never reached her. A deafening crack of thunder split the night. A massive bolt of blue electricity descended from the heavens, slamming into the Vampire with the force of a falling star. He was hurled several meters across the clearing, his body smoking and twitching against the charred earth. Above the crater, a shadow blotted out the moon. A massive griffin, its feathers sparking with static and its eyes glowing a fierce, lightning blue, hovered over Lily.
Satoro leapt from the saddle before the beast even touched the ground. He sprinted to his granddaughter, sliding on his knees to pull her into his arms.
"LILY!" He tapped her cheeks with trembling fingers, his voice desperate. "Lily, wake up! Please!"
He pressed two fingers to her neck. For a second, the world stood still. Then, he felt it—the steady, rhythmic thump of her heart. "She's just unconscious," he exhaled, his shoulders sagging in a wave of relief. "She'll be alright."
Behind him, the sound of sobbing broke through the crackle of the lightning. The second Defender came running up, her face streaked with tears and dirt. She stopped in front of Satoro, unable to speak at first.
"Master Raika... it's Namizo," she choked out. "He's... he's gone."
Satoro closed his eyes, a heavy silence falling over him. He understood. He looked toward the treeline and saw Kiego. The boy was a mess. He stood there, his left arm hanging at a sickening, broken angle. LUMINOUS was strapped to his back, its golden light now dim. Tears welled up in Kiego's eyes as he saw Lily in Satoro's arms. The adrenaline that had kept him upright for the last ten minutes was finally vanishing, replaced by a crushing weight of grief.
"Satoro?" Kiego whispered, his voice cracking.
"Don't cry, Kiego!" Satoro called out, his own voice thick with emotion. "She's alright! Look at me, she's alive!"
But the tears wouldn't stop. Kiego's head slumped down as he sniffed and sobbed. He tried to wipe away the tears but they kept flowing down his dirt stained cheeks. "I thought you died," he wailed, the terror of the night finally breaking him. "I thought you were dead!"
"Come on... we both know nothing can kill me," Satoro said, though his voice lacked its usual jovial edge. Kiego wiped his face with his tattered sleeves, his breath hitching. "Namizo is... Namizo is dead!" he sobbed, the reality of the loss crashing down on him. Satoro's expression softened, but his eyes remained fixed on the smoking crater where the Vampire lay. "I know, Kiego... it's not your fault. Don't cry."
"If I had awakened sooner... if I was just strong enough... maybe he wouldn't have died!" Kiego's voice rose to a remorseful shout, tears flowing down his cheeks like a waterfall. "He would still be alive! I'M WEAK! I COULDN'T HELP ANYONE!"
A raspy, mocking laugh echoed from the crater. The Vampire dragged himself to his feet, his charred skin already beginning to knit back together. "Now this isn't fair," he hissed, his black eyes glinting with malice. "Three against one?… or should I say one vs one. .Forgot about the wind girl and the weak hero." He grinned. Satoro glared at him in rage.
"Kiego... take care of Lily."
"Huh? Okay..." Kiego scrambled over to Lily's side, shielding her body with his own. Satoro stood tall, sparks of brilliant blue lightning beginning to dance across his palms and travel up his arms. The air grew heavy with the scent of ozone.
"AWAKEN... STORMRAIDER!"
In a flash of blinding light, a massive, long-handed hammer formed in his grip. The head of the weapon hummed with enough electrical current to power a city.
"Right on time, old man," the Vampire sneered. Nearby, the other Defenders returned, carrying Namizo's limp body. The female Defender was whimpering, her face pale as she struggled to maintain her composure. The Vampire glanced at the corpse and smiled, a truly sickening expression.
"I see you're mourning the barrier guy," the Vampire taunted, his voice dripping with contempt. "It's useless to do that. He died because he was weak... and he tried to play the hero. TH WEAK
"DIE! THE STRONG SURVIVE!" Izanami bellowed, his voice distorted by rage as he channeled every ounce of his remaining power. Black ripples of concentrated gravity surged into his arms, distorting the very air around his fists. He shot a predatory glance toward the unconscious Lily. "Don't worry, old man... you'll be seeing her again soon in the afterlife".
Satoro didn't offer a rebuttal. His face was a mask of thunderous fury as he launched himself forward, a jagged trail of blue electricity crackling in his wake. "YOU TALK TOO MUCH!"
The Master Defender closed the distance in a heartbeat, bringing STORMRAIDER around in a massive, horizontal arc. Izanami threw a desperate punch to counter, but just as the hammer was about to connect, Satoro's momentum came to a violent, unnatural halt.
"WHAT!" Satoro gritted his teeth, his muscles straining against an invisible force as he tried to force the hammer through. In an instant, the gravity field inverted. Satoro was violently yanked into the air, his body suspended upside down by unseen webs of insane strength. His arms and legs were forced apart, leaving him splayed out and vulnerable in the center of the clearing. He roared in frustration, but he could feel his strength fading; the trap was acting as a siphon, draining the very magical energy from his core.
"It looks like you're growing weaker, Izanami," a smooth, condescending voice called out from the darkness above. A figure plummeted from the clouds, striking the ground with the force of a meteor. The impact created a deep crater in the soil, sending a plume of dust into the moonlight. As the debris settled, the newcomer stood tall, brushing a stray speck of dirt from his shoulder.
"YOU CAN'T EVEN GET RID OF A FEW ANTS," the man mocked, his eyes flashing with disdain.
Izanami's concentration wavered, his face turning a shade paler. "KOKETSU! What the hell are you doing here?"
"I decided to drop by to see what was taking you so long," Koketsu said, his voice calm and terrifying. "I must say... I'm disappointed".
"SHUT UP, KOKETSU!" Izanami snarled, his pride wounded as much as his body. "STAY OUT OF THIS!"
Koketsu stepped closer to Izanami, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "You've had your time. Master calls for us."
Izanami's face contorted in a snarl. "Stay out of this, it's my kill!"
He tried to walk past the demon, but Koketsu's hand shot out, gripping Izanami's shoulder with crushing strength. Koketsu's eyes began to glow a haunting, incandescent white. "You know what happens if you don't come," he threatened. "WE'RE GOING."
"GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME!" Izanami roared, his own eyes bleeding into an abyssal black.
"MAKE ME," Koketsu challenged.
The two monsters stood locked in a lethal stare, the air between them vibrating with clashing auras. But before either could strike, Izanami's gaze flickered toward the horizon. His eyes widened as he saw twenty griffins flying toward them. Koketsu turned as well, his white glow fading into realization.
"A VAMPIRE AND A SPIDER DEMON IN SIGHT!" a booming voice echoed from the lead griffin. Flamington stood on the back of his mount, his eyes scanning the battlefield with clinical precision. "The vampire does not have much magical energy in him. The spider demon has a large amount of magical energy."
He prepared to dive, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "I will engage him in close combat while Team A supports me from behind! Team B and C will handle the other one. Team D will help Satoro and his crew!"
He looked down at the two monsters and drew a breath. "NO QUESTIONS... LET'S DEFEND!"
With that, Flamington dropped down from his griffin and plummeted toward the earth.
