Chapter 16 - Part 15

Kiego dropped from the sky like a golden streak, LUMINOUS blazing in his hands. He didn't just swing; he poured every ounce of his newfound resolve into the arc of the blade. The steel bit through flesh and bone, clean and surgical, severing the Vampire's hand mid-air. Kiego hit the ground, his chest heaving. A wild, electric thrill surged through him—he had actually done it. He had drawn blood from a monster.

"YOU AGAIN!" the Vampire roared, his voice thick with disbelief and fury. "HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO TAKE CARE OF YOU!"

The Vampire spun in a blurred circle, his leg lashing out in a devastating kick. Kiego barely managed to bring LUMINOUS up to block. The impact was like being hit by a falling mountain; the concentrated gravity behind the strike sent Kiego flying across the clearing. He tumbled through the dirt, eventually coming to a stop far from the center of the fight.

"KIEGO!" Lily cried out, her heart hammering.

She turned her gaze back to the Vampire. With a sickening, wet Poom!, his severed hand stitched itself back together in a matter of seconds. The Vampire stared at his newly healed flesh, his expression shifting from rage to genuine shock. The kid can actually inflict damage on me, he thought. And he blocked that kick... Lily watched the Vampire closely, her tactical mind racing. She noticed a flicker in the dark aura surrounding him. The gravity shield, she realized. It's growing weaker. She did the math in her head. He was healing, he was fighting, and he was maintaining that heavy gravity field all at once. Even with Namizo's energy, he was hitting his limit. Namizo probably didn't have much magical energy left, she mused. Maybe I just need to force him to burn through the rest of his reserves.

"HEY!"

The Vampire snapped his head toward her. Lily stood tall, her rapier held steady. The wind began to howl around her, glowing with a violent, ethereal light. Her blue hair swayed wildly, whipping left and right in the direction of the gale. Her eyes were fixed on his, cold and unwavering. Lily stood her ground as Tempest began to pulse with a blinding white radiance. The wind didn't just howl now; it roared, circling her in a tight, violent cyclone that pushed back the shadows of the forest.

The Vampire's eyes narrowed. She still has this much left in her? he wondered, a twisted grin stretching across his pale face. He didn't care about her spirit—he only cared about her power. "LET ME HAVE A TASTE OF THAT BLOOD, PRINCESS!"

He began to focus. He pulled the crushing gravity away from his lower body, funneling every ounce of the crushing weight into his fists. His legs felt lighter, but his punches were now heavy enough to shatter mountains. He knew the trade-off: his protective gravity layers would thin with every strike he threw, but he didn't plan on needing more than one.Lily watched his hands. She saw the shifting energy, the way the first layer of his defense weakened to fuel the offense. In that moment, she thought, her pulse steady, I'll slice it off. She closed her eyes for a heartbeat, inhaling the scent of ozone and pine. She exhaled, and the world slowed down.

"TEMPEST..."

The wind exploded outward, shaping itself into the form of a massive hawk. Its wingspan filled the clearing, its translucent feathers shimmering with lethal energy. Lily lunged forward, her speed doubled by the gale at her back.

"FLYING HAWK!"

"EARTH'S FORCE!" the Vampire countered.

BAM!

The Vampire's fist, glowing with the dark weight of DOOMBREAKER, slammed into the center of the hawk. The gravity released in that single direction was absolute, obliterating everything in its path and sending a shockwave through the trees.

The Vampire's eyes snapped open in sudden, cold surprise. The hawk wasn't solid. It was a decoy—a shell of wind and light.

SHING!

A silver flash cut through the settling dust. The Vampire's remaining hand spun through the air, severed cleanly at the wrist. Dark blood sprayed across the grass as his eyes bulged in shock. He hadn't even seen her move. Lily appeared behind him, her rapier held in a low guard, the white light of TEMPEST slowly beginning to dim.

The Vampire sensed a presence behind him and swung wildly with his remaining hand. But his knuckles met only empty air—another decoy.

SHING!

The blade of TEMPEST sang through the air, and the Vampire's second hand hit the dirt. He stumbled back, his mind reeling in pure confusion. He didn't understand. How was she predicting every single one of his movements? Lily moved like a ghost in the wind. This was the true power of FlYING HAWK. It didn't just grant her speed; it granted her vision. For a fleeting moment, her mind accelerated, allowing her to see thirty seconds into a potential future. She saw his strikes before he even thought to throw them. But the cost was staggering. The technique placed a violent strain on her nervous system, threatening to paralyze her the longer she held it. Five seconds left! Lily's mind screamed. I have to kill him NOW!

The Vampire tripped over his own heels, losing his balance and falling backward. He blinked, and suddenly Lily was there, hovering above him like a vengeful angel. Her eyes blazed with a blinding white light, and the wind-hawk screeched, its massive form wrapping around her as she gripped the hilt with both hands. She swung for his neck.

BOOM!

In a final, desperate act of survival, the Vampire detonated a black wave of gravity from his very core to his neck. The shockwave was absolute. Lily was caught mid-swing and hurled through the air like a feather. She hit the ground hard, her head snapping back against the earth. The light in her eyes flickered and died as darkness took her. She lay still, unconscious on her back.

The Vampire slumped over, coughing up thick, dark blood. He was handless, broken, and wheezing, but he was still alive.

The Vampire hacked up a glob of thick, black blood as he struggled to one knee. It was a gruesome sight. Lily's final strike had been more devastating than he'd anticipated; the bones in his neck were completely shattered, leaving his head to hang at a sickening, disfigured angle against his chest. He didn't panic. Instead, he channeled the last of his gravity, concentrating the force around his spine to act as an invisible, unbreakable brace.

Crunch. Snap.

His neck cracked several times as he forced his head back into its proper position. Slowly, the "Poom!" of rapid regeneration echoed in the quiet clearing. His right hand knitted itself together from the stump, followed immediately by the left. He twisted his neck, a loud, wet crack signaling that the bones had fused once more. He stood up and walked slowly to her.

"THAT GIRL!" the Vampire hissed, his voice a ragged rasp. "I HAVE TO DRINK HER BLOOD."

He was burning through his stolen magical energy at a terrifying rate just to stay standing, but he didn't care. Lily lay unconscious under the cold moonlight, the violent winds that had protected her now reduced to a stagnant calm. Her rapier, once a beacon of white light, was driven deep into the dirt, its blade now a dull, plain transparent hue. Step by step, he closed the distance. He could sense her mana—it was a tiny, flickering spark, nearly extinguished. He loomed over her, a shadow swallowing her small frame. He didn't just want to kill her anymore; he wanted to consume what was left of that magnificent spirit. He looked down at her and felt a strange surge of pride. He hadn't felt this alive in decades. This fight... it was exciting, he thought with a jagged smile.
