Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: He Has Already Made His Choice

Inside the hospital ward, Euphonie, an ace Melusine agent from the Marechaussee Phantom, told Rei the investigation results in detail.

After listening, a shadow crossed Rei's face. He sighed softly. "I dragged Captain Charles into this."

Euphonie lifted her small face, her eyes full of confusion, and asked, "Captain Rei, what do you mean?"

Rei looked out the window and spoke slowly. "Captain Charles usually takes good care of me. He is a kind and upright person. How could he possibly hire a killer to murder someone?"

Euphonie answered seriously, "But, Captain Rei, all the evidence points to him as the mastermind, and he has already admitted the crime himself."

Rei shook his head. A trace of compassion appeared in his eyes. "Captain Charles has a son who is not even ten years old. He values his son and would do anything for him."

Hearing this, Euphonie's heart shook, and she immediately understood what Rei was really saying.

And when she connected it with the fact that it was members of the Cappet family who brought Charles to the Marechaussee Phantom…

Everything seemed to point to one truth: the Cappet family used Charles's son to force Charles to confess.

Euphonie took a deep breath and said with a solemn expression, "Captain Rei, I will go back to the Marechaussee Phantom right now and reinvestigate this matter from the beginning."

After saying that, she politely said goodbye to Rei, turned around, and left quickly.

Watching Euphonie's retreating back, the corners of Rei's mouth lifted slightly into a faint smile.

However, the smile did not stay long.

Chiori and Emilie walked into the ward side by side, each holding a large food box.

"Rei, Emilie and I both made Old Goose Soup today. Come taste them and judge whose is better." The corner of Chiori's mouth held a smile that was almost invisible.

Looking at the food boxes, Rei complained nonstop in his heart, but his mouth answered quickly, "Okay!"

After that, he worked hard to finish both portions of Old Goose Soup. His belly swelled until it was round.

"Alright, time to give your evaluation!" Chiori urged.

Looking at their two expectant faces, Rei answered honestly, "Both were very delicious. Each one has its own good points."

Chiori glared at him, unhappy. "Say it directly. Whose was better?"

Rei suddenly had an idea. He held his stomach with both hands. "Ah, sorry, my stomach hurts."

As soon as he said it, without waiting for Chiori or Emilie to react, he quickly slipped into the ward's restroom.

Chiori secretly cursed, "Shameless," but there was nothing she could do.

Emilie reached out and gently pushed up her glasses. "I think it's better not to force him to choose. The more you force him, the more he pulls away."

Hearing that, Chiori shook her head a little. "That guy has already made his choice."

After that, she packed up her food box and left slowly.

Emilie stayed where she was, a thoughtful look appearing on her face. Then she also packed up her food box and left.

Only after Rei was sure both of them had gone did he come out of the restroom.

He rubbed his painfully bloated stomach and secretly complained in his heart: This life is truly impossible to live!

After thinking for a moment, he decided to go do his discharge papers right away.

In the afternoon, the sunlight was warm and comfortable. Oldman entered the Palais Mermonia.

The moment he entered, he felt the strange looks from the staff in the hall. Those looks were like they were staring at the final villain.

Oldman frowned slightly, and at the same time, he felt confused.

Clearly, the mastermind behind the paid assassination had already been found, so why was everyone still looking at him like this?

He silently quickened his pace and reached his office.

Not long after he sat down at his desk, Ske walked in quickly, his face full of gloom.

"What's wrong?" Oldman asked, clearly unhappy.

Ske did not speak. He only handed a written statement to Oldman.

Oldman reached out, took it, and read it quickly.

As his eyes moved line by line, his face grew darker and darker. Anger and suppressed frustration churned in his eyes.

"Bastard!" Oldman slammed his fist hard on the desk. With a loud bang, the documents on the table shook.

Seeing this, Ske suggested in a low voice, "Lord, should we go and explain that the assassination really had nothing to do with us?"

Hearing that, the fire in Oldman's heart burned even hotter. He grabbed a folder from the table and threw it at Ske. "Explain your mother's head! Can't you see the kid did this on purpose? He just wants to splash dirty water on us!"

Ske did not dare dodge at all, letting the folder hit him.

With a submissive face, he asked, "why would he do this? Clearly, Charles is the one who wanted to kill him!"

Oldman snorted coldly. "If Charles is treated as the mastermind, this whole thing becomes an ordinary murder case, and Rei will not become Fontaine's Hero of Justice."

Only then did Ske understand the reason behind it.

He hesitated for a moment, then asked again, "But the evidence that Charles hired the killer is conclusive. It proves this has nothing to do with us."

Oldman answered with a mocking tone, "The public usually only believes what they want to believe. Even if the evidence is clear and undeniable, in their eyes it only proves the Cappet family has terrifying power and can do anything it wants."

Just then, someone knocked gently on the office door.

Right after that, several grim-faced agents of the Marechaussee Phantom walked in.

A petite Melusine agent walked straight up to Ske.

She lifted her head and looked directly into his eyes. Her tone was calm, but it carried a hard firmness. "Officer Ske, we have some matters we want to ask you about."

Ske answered stiffly, "What matters? If you don't explain clearly, I refuse to accept questioning."

The Melusine agent looked up at him and said coldly, "Why was it that on that evening, the people who entered Charles's office were all disciples of the Cappet family? What exactly did you discuss? And why were Cappet disciples the ones supporting Charles when he went to turn himself in?"

Ske was instantly speechless. He did not know how to answer.

After that, the agents of the Marechaussee Phantom took him away immediately.

Inside the office, Oldman sat in his chair, his face terrifyingly dark.
