Ten p.m. The night was still and silent.
Cecilia Adler and Titus Shaw set out for the mountains together. He wasn't familiar with the mountain paths, but he could unerringly tell which way to go.
Unable to contain her curiosity, she asked, "How can you tell which way is which?"
"The stars," Titus Shaw said, teaching her how to navigate by them. "If it's overcast and you can't see the stars, you can find a tree stump and look at the rings. The rings on the south-facing side will be farther apart, while the ones on the north-facing side will be closer together. Or you can check the moss on rocks..."
He went on for a while. "Cecilia, did you remember all that? I'll show you some real-life examples tomorrow in the daylight."
"Okay."
Titus Shaw swept the flashlight beam around the area, finally settling on a spot thick with dry grass. "There are a lot of rabbit droppings here. This must be a spot they frequent. We'll wait here."
