"Zain. Hold them off."
Elena's command cut through the chaos.
Zain stepped forward. Stone already manifesting. "How long?"
"Three minutes. Then follow us."
"You're insane."
"Probably." Elena grabbed Jayden's arm. "Marcus, Cinna, move. Now."
Theron's forces had stopped at the forest edge. Watching. Calculating.
"Elena Northstar," Theron called. "Think about what you're doing. Your family "
"Can deal with it." She didn't look back. "Zain. Go."
Zain slammed his fists together. The ground trembled.
A wall of stone erupted between the two groups. Twenty feet high. Solid.
"That won't hold a Sage," Vance said.
"Doesn't need to." Zain manifested twin stone gauntlets. "Just needs to slow him down."
Theron's essence flared. Space warped.
Zain moved to intercept.
Elena pulled Jayden deeper into the forest. Marcus carried him when his legs gave out. Cinna ran ahead, checking their path.
"Where are we going?" Marcus asked.
"Safe house. Two miles northeast."
"You have a safe house?"
"My family has safe houses everywhere." Elena vaulted over a fallen log. "This one's unregistered. Off the books. Perfect for hiding."
Jayden's vision swam. Blood loss. Essence depletion. His body was shutting down.
"Stay with me," Elena said. "We're almost there."
Behind them an explosion. The sound of stone shattering.
Zain's wall breaking.
"He bought us two minutes," Elena muttered. "Good enough."
They ran harder.
The forest thickened. Trees so dense the moonlight barely penetrated.
Then suddenly a clearing.
And in the center a cabin.
Small. Wooden. Ancient looking. But the essence barriers surrounding it were anything but old.
"Inside. Quick."
Elena pressed her hand to the door. Ice spread across the surface. A lock mechanism activated.
The door opened.
They stumbled in.
The interior was bigger than it looked. Clean. Well stocked. A fireplace. Beds. Medical supplies.
"Lay him down." Elena pointed at a cot.
Marcus set Jayden down carefully. Cinna's hands immediately glowed green.
"His essence is almost gone," Cinna said. "And his shoulder "
"I know. Do what you can."
Healing light washed over Jayden. The pain dulled. But exhaustion remained.
Elena moved to the window. Watched the forest.
Footsteps approached.
She manifested her rapier.
The door opened.
Zain stepped through. Blood on his face. Stone gauntlets cracked.
"They're ten minutes behind. Maybe less." He locked the door. "Theron's pissed."
"Did you "
"Kill anyone? No. But I gave them a reason to reconsider chasing." Zain collapsed into a chair. "How is he?"
"Alive. Barely."
Jayden's eyes opened slightly. Everything hurt.
"Why?" His voice was hoarse. "Why are you helping me?"
Elena didn't turn from the window. "Because Theron's wrong. And I don't follow orders I disagree with."
"Your family will "
"I'll handle my family." Her tone was ice. "Right now, we focus on survival."
Zain stood. Checked the barriers around the cabin. "These will hold. For a while. But Theron's a Sage. He'll find us eventually."
"Then we don't stay long." Elena finally turned. "Twelve hours. Let Jayden recover. Then we move."
"Move where?" Marcus asked.
"Anywhere but here."
Cinna finished healing Jayden's shoulder. The wound closed but pink scar tissue remained.
"That's the best I can do without proper supplies."
"It's enough." Jayden sat up slowly. Everything spun. "You all shouldn't have "
"Save it," Zain interrupted. "We made our choice. Just like you made yours."
"But your futures "
"Were already complicated." Elena pulled out food from a storage cabinet. "Eat. Rest. We'll figure out the rest tomorrow."
She distributed rations. Dried meat. Bread. Water.
They ate in silence.
Outside, the forest was alive with movement. Search parties. Essence signatures sweeping.
But the barriers held.
For now.
Hours passed.
Marcus took first watch. Zain second. Elena refused to sleep.
Jayden lay on the cot, staring at the ceiling.
His eye flickered weakly. Barely functional.
[Essence recovery: 8%]
[Estimated full recovery: 36 hours]
[Threat assessment: EXTREME]
"Can't sleep?"
Elena's voice. She sat in the chair beside his cot.
"Too much to think about."
"Yeah." She was quiet for a moment. "You hit 33.7 units. I watched."
"Felt faster."
"It was. You moved like a Grandmaster. Maybe higher." Her expression was unreadable. "How?"
"Omni. The overclock. Desperation." Jayden closed his eyes. "Take your pick."
"You matched Theron's speed. For a second. I saw his face." Elena leaned forward. "He was scared."
"Good."
"Is it?" Her voice dropped. "Because now he knows what you're capable of. And scared people make dangerous choices."
Jayden opened his eyes. Met hers. "What would you have done? Let them cage me?"
"No." No hesitation. "I would've done exactly what you did."
"Then why do you sound like you regret helping?"
"Because I know what comes next." Elena stood. "War. Between students and faculty. Between families and the Academy. You just fractured the most powerful institution in the Concordant Realms."
"I didn't mean to "
"Doesn't matter. You did." She moved to the window. "And now we all live with the consequences."
Silence fell.
Outside, an essence signature passed close. Too close.
Everyone tensed.
The signature paused. Probed the area.
Then moved on.
They breathed again.
"We can't stay," Marcus said quietly. "Even twelve hours is pushing it."
"I know." Elena checked her watch. "But Jayden needs time to recover. At least a few hours. Otherwise he's dead weight."
"I can move now," Jayden said.
"No. You can't." Zain's voice was flat. "You can barely stand. And if Theron finds us while you're like this, we're all dead."
He wasn't wrong.
Jayden sank back down. Frustration and exhaustion warring.
Cinna sat beside Marcus. "What's the plan? Long term?"
"Survive," Elena said. "Short term, we run. Long term..." She trailed off.
"We become fugitives," Zain finished. "Hunted by the Academy. Possibly by kingdoms and guilds who fear Jayden's growth."
"Great," Marcus muttered. "Fantastic future."
"Better than being experimented on," Jayden said quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
"Theron would've done it. Eventually. The chains were just the start." Jayden's fist clenched. "Professor Kane showed me the records. What they did to Lucian. Tests. Restrictions. Torture disguised as study."
"And you think Theron "
"I think he's terrified of another Transcendent. And fear makes people monstrous."
The room fell silent.
Because they all knew he was right.
Elena's watch beeped. Three hours since they'd arrived.
"Rest rotation. Marcus, Zain, sleep. Cinna and I will watch."
They settled in. The cabin was small but secure.
Jayden closed his eyes. Tried to sleep.
But all he saw was Theron's face.
The betrayal.
The chains.
The choice that led them here.
I can't go back.
His eye pulsed weakly.
[Decision point recorded.]
[Trajectory: Fugitive.]
[Estimated survival time: Unknown.]
The text faded.
Outside, the search continued.
But inside the hidden cabin, five students slept.
Tomorrow they'd run.
And keep running until they were strong enough to stop.
Or until the world caught them.
