Fragments of a conversation from five years ago surfaced in Serena's mind.
She heard Jasper Grant's voice echoing in pain and bitterness: "Fate is unfair to me. Serena, you're unfair to me too."
She also heard Adrian Shaw's self-mocking laugh: "Serena, it would've been better if you hadn't come to me from the start."
And she remembered the words that the Shaw family had said to her, things that made her want to crawl into a hole and disappear, and then herself, clinging stubbornly to the last shred of dignity as she made her vow: "In this lifetime, I will never set foot in the Shaw Family home."
She hadn't lied to Adrian… She really had no intention of getting married, let alone marrying Adrian Shaw.
Serena cast Jasper Grant a glance, seeing the small strip of forearm exposed by his rolled-up sleeve, just above which was a fierce scar.
That was from years ago, when they'd run into some thugs—Jasper had fought them to protect her, and left that mark on him.
