Chapter 10 - EPISODE 10 : AFTER THE BELL

Maple Valley — Evening

The sun hung low over Maple Valley.

Golden light spilled across the streets, painting the city in shades of amber and copper.

Cars moved lazily through downtown roads.

Students filled cafés near Westridge University.

The city carried its usual rhythm.

Calm.

Comfortable.

Unaware.

And somewhere within that rhythm—

Lisa Walker exited the Administration Building.

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

The large wooden doors closed softly behind her.

For a moment she simply stood there.

Still processing.

The conversation with Dr. Mira Hale replayed inside her mind.

"You're adapting too quickly to people around you. And too slowly to yourself."

The words refused to leave.

Lisa sighed.

"What does that even mean?"

The autumn breeze answered with silence.

CAMPUS PATHWAY

Students crossed the campus in every direction.

Some heading home.

Some heading to clubs.

Some simply enjoying the evening.

Life continued normally.

Yet Lisa felt strangely thoughtful.

Less embarrassed now.

More confused.

She walked without paying much attention to where she was going.

Until—

"Hey."

Lisa looked up.

Sophie.

Sophie immediately studied her face.

"Okay."

Lisa blinked.

"Okay what?"

"You survived."

Lisa laughed despite herself.

"Apparently."

Sophie exaggerated a relieved sigh.

"Thank goodness."

"I wasn't being executed."

"We didn't know that."

Lisa shook her head.

"You and Kevin are impossible."

"Mostly Kevin."

"Fair."

Both laughed.

The tension eased slightly.

CAFETERIA

A few minutes later they entered the campus cafeteria.

Evening crowds filled most tables.

The smell of coffee and fresh pastries drifted through the room.

Lisa and Sophie found an empty table near the window.

Outside, Maple Valley glowed beneath the setting sun.

Inside—

Kevin was already waiting.

Kevin dramatically stood up.

"She's alive."

Lisa stared.

"I'm leaving."

"No."

Kevin sat immediately.

"We were worried."

"You looked excited."

"I can be both."

Sophie nearly choked laughing.

The conversation drifted naturally.

Classes.

Assignments.

Campus gossip.

Random nonsense.

The kind of conversations that only happened among people growing comfortable with each other.

Then—

Someone approached the table.

ETHAN ARRIVES

Ethan Philip.

Casual as ever.

A coffee cup in one hand.

Confidence in every step.

Several nearby students greeted him as he passed.

He greeted each one effortlessly.

The effect wasn't intentional.

It simply happened.

"Mind if I sit?" Ethan asked.

Kevin pointed dramatically.

"No. But we're charging rent."

Ethan pulled out a chair anyway.

Ethan looked toward Lisa.

"You doing okay?"

Lisa nodded.

"Yeah."

This time she actually meant it.

"Dean didn't kill you?"

"Disappointingly, no."

Kevin snapped his fingers.

"There goes my prediction."

The table laughed.

Even Ethan smiled.

And for a moment—

Everything felt easy.

MEANWHILE

Across the cafeteria—

Austin sat alone near the far corner.

A finance textbook rested open before him.

Headphones around his neck.

Coffee beside him.

From a distance he appeared focused on reading.

But every now and then—

His eyes lifted.

Toward the group.

Toward Lisa.

Only briefly.

Then back to the book.

Unfortunately—

Sophie noticed everything.

She glanced toward Austin.

Then toward Lisa.

Then back toward Austin.

A slow smile appeared.

Dangerous.

Observant.

Lisa immediately narrowed her eyes.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Sophie."

"Nothing."

That usually meant something.

The cafeteria speaker crackled.

An announcement echoed overhead.

"Reminder: Westridge University's annual Autumn Festival begins this weekend.

Student participation is encouraged."

Instantly conversations erupted around the room.

The Autumn Festival.

One of the university's biggest traditions.

Music.

Food.

Games.

Competitions.

Club events.

Three days of celebration.

Kevin sat up immediately.

"Oh we're absolutely going."

Sophie nodded.

"Obviously."

Ethan shrugged.

"Could be fun."

Then everyone looked toward Lisa.

Lisa smiled.

"I'm in."

Kevin looked around.

Then pointed across the cafeteria.

Toward Austin.

"He's coming too."

Austin looked up slowly.

Already suspicious.

Kevin stood and marched across the room.

Lisa covered her face.

"No."

Sophie immediately leaned forward.

"Yes."

Austin watched Kevin approach.

Expression neutral.

Which usually meant trouble.

Kevin dropped into the chair opposite him.

"You are attending the Autumn Festival."

"No."

"That wasn't a question."

Austin returned his attention to the book.

"No."

Kevin smiled.

"Westridge law requires attendance."

"It doesn't."

"It should."

A pause.

Then Kevin lowered his voice.

"The group is going."

Austin didn't answer.

Kevin smirked.

"Lisa too."

Austin finally looked up.

Kevin immediately knew he'd won.

"...One day," Austin said quietly, "you're going to be unbearable."

Kevin grinned.

"Today?"

"Already there."

LATER THAT NIGHT- AUSTIN'S DORM ROOM

The room sat in comfortable silence.

Kevin was absent.

Soccer practice.

For once—

Austin was alone.

A notebook rested open on his desk.

The same notebook he rarely allowed anyone to see.

He stared at the blank page.

Thinking.

About the day.

About the dean's office.

About Lisa.

About things he preferred not thinking about.

After several moments—

He finally wrote.

Some people fill every room they enter.

His pen paused.

Then continued.

Some people leave a room and somehow remain there anyway.

Austin stared at the sentence.

Longer than necessary.

Then closed the notebook.

Immediately.

As though catching himself.

WESTRIDGE CAMPUS — NIGHT

The campus stood beneath a sky filled with stars.

Buildings glowed softly.

Students crossed pathways.

Music drifted from distant dormitories.

The Autumn Festival banners fluttered in the wind.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Promising change.

And somewhere within Westridge University—

Five lives continued moving toward a future none of them could yet see.
