Maple Valley — Westridge University
Time : 10:17 PM
Music continued to echo beneath the maple trees.
Laughter drifted across the university grounds as hundreds of students danced beneath strings of warm golden lights.
The Autumn Festival was still alive.
The stage lights shimmered.
The bonfires crackled.
The city beyond the university glowed peacefully beneath the clear autumn sky.
Yet...
Not everyone remained beneath those lights.
Austin Carter walked away from the celebration alone.
His hands rested inside the pockets of his dark hoodie as he followed one of the quieter stone pathways leading away from the festival.
Behind him...
The music slowly faded.
The laughter became distant.
Every step carried him farther from the crowd.
Closer...
To silence.
The pathway curved gently between rows of old maple trees.
Golden leaves drifted lazily through the cool night air before settling upon the stone pavement beneath his feet.
Austin slowed his pace.
His thoughts were louder than the festival ever could be.
"Why did it bother me?"
The question had followed him ever since Ethan extended his hand toward Lisa.
He had watched her smile.
Watched her laugh.
Watched her place her hand in Ethan's.
There had been nothing wrong with it.
Nothing.
Ethan was his own person.
Lisa was free to dance with anyone she wanted.
So why...
Why had it felt...
Different?
Austin sighed quietly.
"No..."
he whispered to himself.
"They're just friends."
His footsteps continued.
"I'm overthinking."
He almost believed himself.
Almost.
Back at the dance floor...
Lisa's eyes instinctively searched the crowd.
She looked toward the maple tree where Austin had been standing only moments ago.
Empty.
Her smile faded slightly.
"...Where did he go?"
Ethan finished speaking with a few juniors before walking back toward her.
"You okay?"
Lisa blinked.
"Yeah..."
Her eyes wandered toward the dimly lit pathway leading away from the festival.
"I'll be back."
Ethan smiled.
"Don't disappear."
Lisa laughed softly.
"I'll try."
Without waiting for another question...
She walked away.
Ethan watched her leave.
For reasons he couldn't explain...
Something about that moment stayed with him.
The sounds of the festival became quieter with every step Lisa took.
Soon...
Only the wind accompanied her.
She followed the lantern-lit pathway until she spotted a familiar figure walking ahead.
"Austin!"
Her voice echoed softly through the trees.
Austin stopped.
He didn't turn immediately.
For several quiet seconds...
He simply stood there.
Then...
Slowly...
He looked back.
Lisa caught up to him, slightly out of breath.
"You walk fast."
Austin answered calmly.
"I wasn't trying to."
She smiled.
"I know."
Silence settled comfortably between them.
Austin looked at her.
"You didn't have to follow me."
Lisa met his eyes.
"I know."
A gentle breeze passed between them.
"But..."
she smiled,
"I wanted to."
Austin blinked once.
He wasn't expecting that answer.
Not at all.
Neither of them spoke for a while.
Instead...
They simply began walking together.
No destination.
No hurry.
Only the quiet company of another person.
The stone pathway stretched beneath lanterns that cast warm circles of light upon the ground.
Somewhere nearby...
A fountain trickled softly.
The night felt peaceful.
Lisa glanced sideways.
"So..."
Austin looked ahead.
"So?"
"You've said more words tonight than during our entire first week."
He looked at her.
"...Really?"
"I'm keeping count."
"You count conversations?"
"I count yours."
Austin looked away.
"...That's concerning."
Lisa laughed.
"There it is."
"What?"
"Humor."
"I wasn't joking."
"I know."
She laughed even harder.
Austin sighed quietly.
"...You're impossible."
"So I've been told."
For the first time...
Austin didn't mind the conversation.
Usually...
People exhausted him.
But Lisa...
Somehow...
Didn't.
The pathway eventually opened onto one of the oldest places within Westridge University.
The Bell Tower Garden.
An old stone courtyard overlooked the entire city of Maple Valley.
The ancient bell tower stood proudly above them, illuminated by soft golden lights that highlighted every weathered stone.
A wooden bench rested near the edge of the overlook.
Austin walked toward it naturally.
Lisa followed.
The city stretched before them like a sea of lights.
Cars moved like tiny stars through distant streets.
The festival glowed warmly behind the university.
"It looks..."
Lisa whispered.
"...beautiful."
Austin quietly nodded.
"It always does."
She looked at him.
"You come here often?"
"Sometimes."
"When?"
"When I need quiet."
Lisa leaned against the old stone railing.
"Do crowds really bother you that much?"
Austin thought for a long moment.
"They don't bother me."
"Then?"
"They make me tired."
Lisa frowned slightly.
"I don't understand."
Austin watched the lights below.
"I like listening."
He spoke softly.
"When there are too many voices..."
he smiled faintly,
"...I can't hear my own."
Lisa remained silent.
Not because she didn't have anything to say..
But because she wanted him to continue.
And for the first time...
He did.
"I've always preferred places like this."
He looked toward the endless skyline.
"People think silence is lonely."
A pause.
"I don't."
Lisa smiled gently.
"I used to."
Austin turned toward her.
"But not anymore?"
She slowly shook her head.
"I think..."
she looked toward the city,
"...silence depends on who you're sharing it with."
Austin didn't answer.
But something about those words stayed with him.
The wind carried another maple leaf between them.
It landed gently on Austin's shoulder.
Lisa noticed immediately.
She smiled.
"You've got something."
Austin looked confused.
"What?"
"A souvenir."
She reached forward carefully and lifted the little maple leaf from his hoodie.
"There."
She held it between her fingers.
"You've been walking around looking like part of the tree."
Austin looked at the leaf.
Then...
Without thinking...
He smiled.
Not politely.
Not awkwardly.
A real smile.
Small.
Warm.
Honest.
Lisa froze for just a second.
There it was.
The smile she had been teasing him about.
She could have pointed it out.
She could have laughed.
Instead..
She simply smiled back.
Some moments became smaller when they were spoken aloud.
This one deserved to remain exactly as it was.
High above them—
The first firework burst across the night sky.
A brilliant explosion of crimson and gold reflected in their eyes.
Another followed.
Then another.
Within seconds the skies above Maple Valley bloomed with light.
The entire city looked upward.
Lisa rested both arms upon the stone railing.
"I think this might be my favorite night since coming to Westridge."
Austin looked toward the fireworks.
Then quietly said—
"...Mine too."
She glanced sideways.
"Really?"
He nodded once.
"...It's quieter up here."
Lisa laughed softly.
"Of course that's your reason."
"It usually is."
Their laughter disappeared beneath another burst of fireworks.
Neither realized how much time had passed.
Neither realized they had stopped feeling like strangers.
Far below...
The Autumn Festival continued.
But high above Maple Valley...
Two people who had once shared nothing more than awkward silences now shared something far more meaningful.
Comfort.
Without expectation.
Without confession.
Without needing to define it.
And sometimes...
That was where every great love story truly began.
TO BE CONTINUED....
