Yukiri's perspective:
It has been a full month since school started. Officially February. Everything has settled down, and I've almost memorized the buildings, places, and layouts. Unfortunately, still haven't memorised the names.
Even though I'm no longer in the clutches of my father, it feels like I'm still trapped. The people my father sent haven't shown up in a while. Good.
(Time skip- Yukiri's class: Wolf anatomy, biology)
Third Person Perspective:
Students sat in class as their teacher rambled on about how the species works. Kids scribbled down half hearted notes while others chattered. The teacher didn't scold them, choosing to just let everyone be.
"There have been rumors of people dating recently," a blonde girl gossiped with her friend, who leaned in to listen to the love drama. None of it caught Yukiri's attention at all. In her mind, love was just a waste of time; no one seemed interesting to her.
On the other hand, Kiori kept getting asked out by Zane over and over again. She always said no, causing his tail to drop like a scolded puppy's. Still, he brushed it off every time, trying again and again. Pathetic. Yukiri thought.
The teacher tapped the desk, announcing, "There will be a few sophomores and juniors coming in to look at the freshmen during class for their studies. So behave."
The clean white doors of the biology lab creaked open just as the teacher finished speaking. A quiet ripple of curiosity passed through the rows of freshmen, drawing even Yukiri's distant gaze toward the front of the room.
A handful of older students filed in, carrying clipboards and wearing the confidence of upperclassmen. Among them, a junior with soft but observant eyes scanned the room. Her gaze briefly lingered on Yukiri before she tapped her pen against her clipboard and moved toward the back rows. Of course, Yukiri recognised the junior, it was Lilith, her brother's promised fiancée.
"Alright, settle down," the teacher called out, though the warning lacked any real bite, sounding like pure exhaustion. "They are here to observe your studying behavior. Don't try to do better or worse; just act how you usually act in class."
Almost instantly, the quiet hum of the classroom returned. Two tables over, one of the sophomores, who was clearly slacking off on her social studies, was flirting with one of the upperclassmen who had just walked in.
Yukiri watched the exchange out of the corner of her eye, her expression entirely unreadable. To her, the entire display was exhausting to even witness.
Love. Dating. Infatuation.
It all seemed like an incredible waste of energy a superficial distraction that people indulged in when they didn't have real problems to worry about. They played these repetitive, trivial games because their worlds were safe. It will probably end in tragedy, she thought. Her handwriting grew more scribbled at the thought of her parents.
Her world wasn't safe. It never had been.
Even now, sitting in a mundane biology class surrounded by chattering teenagers, a faint, cold weight pressed against her chest. A month of freedom hadn't erased years of conditioning. She knew how her father operated. The sudden absence of his men didn't mean he had given up; it just meant the pieces on the board were moving in ways she couldn't see yet. She was out of his immediate reach, yes, but the invisible cage still felt as tight as ever.
Even the slightest bit of freedom was enough for her. That feeling again. That feeling that made her want to bite her hand or do anything to escape it.
"Yuki," a cheerful voice interrupted her thoughts.
Yukiri blinked, looking up. It was Lilith. "Hey... wanna catch up later? I haven't seen you in forever."
