Chapter 75 - Chapter 75: The Halloween Peace

Chapter 75: The Halloween Peace

Debbie transformed the Gallagher house into Halloween headquarters starting October 25th.

"Okay, everyone has costume assignments," she announced at family meeting, clipboard in hand like event coordinator. "Carl and Ian, you're doing scary decorations. Liam's pumpkin costume is ordered. Ben and Fiona are going as 'boring married couple'—"

"That's not a costume, that's just us," Fiona interrupted.

"That's the joke." Debbie didn't look up from her checklist. "I'm going as zombie cheerleader. We're carving pumpkins Saturday, decorating Sunday, trick-or-treating Thursday evening. Everyone clear?"

The family exchanged amused looks. Debbie had become organizational force of nature, probably from watching Ben plan everything systematically for months.

"Crystal clear, Sergeant Debbie," Ian said with mock salute.

"Good. Don't screw this up. It's Liam's first real Halloween." She pointed at the three-year-old with her pen. "We're making memories."

Ben

Saturday's pumpkin carving happened in the backyard under autumn sun that felt warm despite October chill.

Liam sat on Ben's lap while they scooped seeds from a small pumpkin. The kid was fascinated by the slimy texture, giggling every time Ben let him grab a handful. Simple joy in simple activity—childhood moment Gallaghers rarely got before stability.

"Gross!" Liam declared happily, seeds dripping between his fingers.

"Very gross," Ben agreed. "That's the fun part."

Carl worked on elaborate scary face nearby, using tools with the precision Ben had taught him in the shop. His pumpkin would be impressive—calculated cuts, symmetrical design, actual artistry.

"You're taking this seriously," Fiona observed, watching Carl measure angles.

"If you're gonna do something, do it right." Carl's tongue stuck out slightly in concentration—the expression he made when focused. "Ben taught me that."

Ian and Mickey carved couples pumpkins—matching designs that fit together when placed side-by-side. Sickeningly cute in way that would've been impossible a year ago when their relationship was all chaos and fighting.

Debbie supervised everything, taking photos on her phone, ensuring everyone stayed on task. She'd become family photographer and event manager somehow.

"This is nice," Fiona said quietly to Ben while Liam investigated another handful of seeds.

"It is."

"I mean really nice. Normal family activity. Kids having fun. No crisis, no chaos, just... Halloween prep." She blinked against sudden emotion. "We never got to do this before. Too busy surviving."

"Now we're living. There's a difference."

"Yeah. There really is."

Sunday brought decoration installation. Carl and Ian strung fake spider webs across the porch, hung plastic skeletons, arranged tombstones in the yard. They went all-out—the Gallagher house would be the scary house on the block.

"Gotta maintain our reputation," Ian joked, positioning a skeleton like it was climbing out of the ground. "Even if we're respectable now, we can still do Halloween right."

Neighbors came out to watch and help. Mrs. Chen from next door contributed extra decorations. The Kowalskis lent their fog machine. The Gallagher house transformed from shabby to festive, community effort making it special.

"Your family's really turned things around," Mrs. Chen told Ben while he was adjusting a giant spider. "Used to be chaos over here. Now look—organized, happy, stable. It's nice to see."

"Thank you. We're trying."

"You're succeeding. Those kids are lucky to have you and Fiona." She smiled. "Tell Debbie her decorations are perfect."

Debbie overheard and beamed. "Thanks, Mrs. Chen!"

Fiona

Halloween night arrived with perfect weather—cool but not cold, clear sky, gentle breeze.

Liam wore his pumpkin costume, orange fabric making him look adorably round. He waddled more than walked, giggling at himself in the mirror.

"Punkin!" he declared, pointing at his reflection.

"You're the cutest pumpkin," Fiona said, fixing his hat. "Ready for candy?"

"Candy! Candy!" He bounced enthusiastically.

Ben and Fiona went as "boring married couple"—normal clothes with name tags that said "MARRIED" in big letters. The joke was they'd become exactly what young Fiona would've mocked, and they were fine with it.

"This is lazy costuming," Ian said.

"This is genius costuming," Ben corrected. "Minimum effort, maximum comedy."

They set out as family unit—Ben carrying Liam, Fiona managing the candy bag, older kids ranging ahead but staying visible. South Side Halloween meant crowded streets, kids everywhere, houses participating with varying enthusiasm.

The response surprised Fiona. Neighbors recognized them, stopped to congratulate on the wedding, praised the kids for being well-behaved.

"Heard you got married over summer," Mr. Rodriguez said from his porch. "Congratulations. You two are good together."

"Thanks," Fiona managed, still adjusting to being seen as stable couple instead of chaotic disaster.

"Kids are doing great too. Carl helped my son with homework last week—real patient teacher." Mr. Rodriguez dropped extra candy in their bags. "You've built something good. Keep it up."

They continued down the street, similar reactions at every house. The Gallagher reputation was shifting from "avoid that family" to "good people in hard circumstances doing their best." Community perception changing because the reality had changed.

"Everyone's being so nice," Debbie observed. "Like actually complimentary."

"Because we're not a mess anymore," Ian said. "Ben and Fiona fixed us."

"We fixed ourselves," Ben corrected. "I just provided tools."

"You provided way more than tools," Carl said. "You provided everything."

Trick-or-treating ended around eight. They returned home with Liam half-asleep in Ben's arms, older kids carrying bags of candy.

The house glowed with decorations, welcoming and festive. V and Kev were waiting inside with hot chocolate and Halloween cookies they'd brought over.

"How was the haul?" V asked.

"Epic," Carl reported, dumping his bag on the table. "Full-size candy bars from the Hendersons."

They sorted candy together—Liam got first pick despite being mostly unconscious, then older kids negotiated trades while Ben and Fiona supervised with V and Kev.

"This is peak suburban normalcy," Mickey observed from the doorway. "Never thought I'd see the Gallaghers do suburban normalcy."

"We're full of surprises," Fiona said.

Later, after V and Kev left and the older kids claimed the TV for scary movie marathon, Fiona and Ben stood on the porch watching the neighborhood wind down.

Jack-o-lanterns glowed on porches. Teenagers roamed in groups. Parents walked younger kids home. Normal Halloween night in South Side Chicago.

"A year ago we were just surviving," Fiona said quietly. "Now we're living. Thriving even."

"We built this. Together."

"Yeah. And it's beautiful." She leaned against him. "The kids are happy. Safe. Growing. Marriage is strong. Future is bright. This is victory."

"Not dramatic but profound."

"Exactly." She kissed him. "Halloween happiness is earned peace. We earned this."

Inside, kids argued over candy trades and movie selection, their voices happy and free from stress. Liam slept peacefully in his pumpkin costume. Decorations glowed softly in October night.

This is what we fought for. Not just survival but joy. Not just avoiding disasters but creating memories. Halloween celebration is proof we made it.

Ben held his wife on their porch, watching their neighborhood settle into evening. Family safe inside, community respectful outside, life stable in ways that once seemed impossible.

Winter approaches. Holidays come. We're ready for all of it.

Together. Always together.
