Chapter 76 - Chapter 76: Thanksgiving Preparations

Chapter 76: Thanksgiving Preparations

The Thanksgiving planning session happened first week of November.

Debbie had actual agenda—typed and printed, categories organized, responsibilities assigned before discussion even started. Ben's influence creating organizational monster, and he wasn't remotely sorry about it.

"Budget is $300," Debbie announced. "That covers turkey, sides, desserts, and extras. We're hosting eight confirmed guests: us six, plus V and Kev, Mickey, and Lip if he makes it home."

"When does Lip get back?" Carl asked.

"Tuesday before Thanksgiving," Fiona said. "Confirmed it yesterday. He's got full week off."

"So nine people minimum." Debbie made a note. "Menu: traditional turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls, and pumpkin pie. V's bringing her sweet potato casserole and Kev's handling drinks."

Ben watched his thirteen-year-old sister-in-law run the meeting with military precision. "You've got this incredibly organized."

"Learned from the best." She didn't look up from her checklist. "Assignments: Fiona and I handle cooking. Ben manages setup and table arrangement. Carl and Ian do cleanup crew. Liam's on entertainment duty—basically just be cute."

"I can do that," Liam said seriously, making everyone laugh.

"What about Frank?" Ian asked. "We inviting him?"

The room went quiet. Frank was complicated variable in any family calculation—unreliable, often drunk, frequently absent, occasionally helpful in unexpected ways.

"I think we should," Fiona said carefully. "He's still our father. Holiday seems like time for family, even difficult family."

"He'll get drunk and ruin everything," Carl predicted.

"Maybe. Or maybe he'll surprise us." Fiona looked at Ben. "What do you think?"

Ben processed the question. Frank in canon was functional alcoholic with rare moments of actual fatherhood. Here, Ben's presence had affected him—Frank helped with the wedding, occasionally showed up sober, exhibited flashes of the man he might have been without addiction.

"Invite him with conditions," Ben said finally. "He's welcome if he's sober and helpful. If he shows up drunk or causes problems, he leaves. Clear boundaries."

"He won't follow boundaries," Ian said.

"Then he leaves and faces consequences. But we give him the chance." Ben looked around the table. "Family means not giving up on people, even when they've given up on themselves. We set expectations, enforce boundaries, but we don't exclude without trying."

Silence while everyone processed this.

"Fine," Carl said. "But I'm not dealing with drunk Frank bullshit on Thanksgiving."

"You won't have to," Ben promised. "I'll handle Frank if he becomes problem."

Lip

Lip's bus arrived Tuesday afternoon at Greyhound station.

Ben picked him up, navigating Chicago traffic while Lip talked about MIT—classes going well, making real friends, actually enjoying college experience instead of just surviving it.

"Sophomore year's smoother than freshman," Lip said, watching the city pass. "Know the campus, know the system, know how to balance everything. Plus my advisor's great—actually helpful instead of just checking boxes."

"Glad it's working out."

"It's more than working out. It's..." Lip searched for words. "I belong there. Like actually belong. Not just smart kid from South Side slumming with rich kids. I'm MIT student who happens to be from South Side. There's a difference."

"Confidence."

"Yeah. Confidence that I earned my place and can keep it." Lip glanced at Ben. "That's partly your influence. You showed me that planning and preparation matter more than just raw intelligence."

"You figured that out. I just provided examples."

"You provided framework. Major difference." Lip shifted in his seat. "How's everyone? Family staying together?"

"Thriving. Carl's learning mechanics and doing better in school. Ian's stable—months without episodes. Debbie's planning college careers. Liam's growing up in actual structured environment."

"Jesus. You really did save everyone."

"We're all saving each other. Family effort."

They reached the house where Thanksgiving preparations were already underway. Fiona was reviewing recipes with Debbie, Carl was organizing chairs in the dining room, Ian and Mickey were somewhere handling decorations.

Lip stood in the doorway, taking in the organized chaos. "This is different."

"Different how?"

"Different from the disaster I left. Everyone's... functional. Happy. Working together." He dropped his bag. "You're holding everything together."

"We're all holding it together," Ben corrected. "Partnership throughout. I'm just one piece."

"Important piece." Lip grabbed his bag, headed for the stairs. "Thanks, Ben. For taking care of them while I'm gone. For making sure they're okay."

"Always."

Ben

Wednesday evening brought Frank's arrival.

He showed up at 6 PM, surprisingly sober, carrying a bag of something.

"Brought rolls," Frank announced, presenting the bag like it was gift basket. "Store-bought, but I figured I should contribute."

Fiona stared. "You brought food?"

"Yeah. It's Thanksgiving. Family contributes." Frank looked uncomfortable with his own helpfulness. "That's how it works, right?"

"Right," Ben said carefully, taking the rolls. "Thank you. Come in."

Frank entered the house cautiously, like he wasn't sure of his welcome. The kids reacted with varying degrees of surprise—Carl suspicious, Ian neutral, Debbie cautiously optimistic, Liam just happy to see "Daddy."

"Ground rules," Ben said quietly while Fiona started dinner. "You're welcome here if you stay sober and helpful. You get drunk or cause problems, you leave. Clear?"

"Crystal." Frank met his eyes. "I'm trying, Ben. Actually trying. Not promising miracles, but I'm trying."

"Trying is good. Keep trying."

Frank helped with prep work—surprisingly competent at tasks assigned to him. He peeled potatoes without complaint, set the table when asked, even played with Liam while others cooked. Functional father appearing briefly through the alcoholic haze.

"He's being weird," Carl muttered to Ben while Frank was occupied with Liam.

"Weird how?"

"Helpful. Sober. Acting like actual dad." Carl watched Frank suspiciously. "What's his angle?"

"Maybe no angle. Maybe he's trying to be better."

"Frank doesn't try to be better. Frank just is what he is."

"People can change. You did—grades improved, behavior corrected, learning legitimate skills. Ian stabilized. Why can't Frank change too?"

Carl considered this. "Because he's had thirty years to change and hasn't."

"Every day is new opportunity. Even for Frank." Ben squeezed Carl's shoulder. "Give him the chance. If he fails, he fails. But give him the chance."

Fiona

That night, with prep work done and everyone asleep, Fiona found Ben reviewing Thanksgiving plans in their bedroom.

"You really think this will work?" she asked, climbing into bed. "Hosting family holiday without disaster?"

"I think we've prepared well. Budget's set, food's organized, responsibilities are clear. If disaster strikes, we'll handle it."

"Always preparing for disasters."

"Always hoping for peace while preparing for disasters. There's a difference." He set down his tablet. "This is our first major holiday as married couple hosting. It matters."

"It does matter. And it's terrifying." She curled against him. "What if something goes wrong? What if Frank gets drunk? What if the turkey doesn't cook right? What if—"

"What if everything goes perfectly? What if Frank stays sober? What if dinner is delicious? What if we create beautiful memory?" Ben kissed her forehead. "Perfect is overrated. Together is what matters. We have together. Everything else is details."

"You're right."

"I'm often right. It's my thing."

She laughed, tension releasing. "Okay. Together matters. Thanksgiving will be beautiful because family is beautiful."

"Exactly."

They fell asleep holding each other, married couple preparing to host first major holiday as functional family unit. Tomorrow was Thanksgiving—test of stability, celebration of growth, proof of how far they'd come from chaos.

Growth made real. Family made functional. Holiday made possible.

We're ready.
