CHAPTER 34: THE TRIGGERING EVENT

Monday morning. Last week before winter break.
The school's energy is wrong. Anticipatory. Like everyone subconsciously knows something's about to break.
I arrive early. Hypervigilant. Scanning for flashpoints.
Sam finds me at my locker. "You okay? You look exhausted."
"Didn't sleep much."
"Still worried about that bad feeling?"
"Yeah."
She kisses my cheek. "Whatever it is, we'll handle it together."
"I hope so. But I don't think you understand what's coming."
Second period, the photo drops.
Someone posted it on Instagram. Sam and Miguel at coffee shop over the weekend. Discussing college recommendations.
The angle makes it look intimate. Romantic. Deliberate framing to suggest something that didn't happen.
By the time I see it, there are already fifty comments.
"Sam's cheating on Ivyn?"
"Miguel and Sam finally together?"
"Cobra Kai/Miyagi-Do love triangle confirmed."
My stomach drops. "This is it. This is the trigger."
I find Miguel between classes. "Did you see the photo?"
"Yeah. It's bullshit. We were just talking about UCLA applications."
"I know. But Tory's going to see it. And she won't care about context."
"What do we do?"
"Damage control. Fast."
But we're too late.
Tory's already seen it. Her rage is nuclear. Visible from across the hallway.
[TRIGGER EVENT: INITIATED]
[Misunderstanding + jealousy + existing tensions]
[Chain reaction: UNSTOPPABLE]
Lunch period. I'm looking for Sam when I hear the commotion.
Hallway near the cafeteria. Crowd gathering. Phones out.
Tory has Sam against the lockers. Shoving. Shouting.
"You can't help yourself, can you? Have to collect every guy. Make sure everyone knows you're better!"
"Nothing happened! We were just talking!" Sam's voice desperate. Scared.
"Liar! I saw the photo!"
I sprint. Pushing through the crowd. Position myself between them.
"Back off, Tory. Now."
"Or what? You'll hit a girl to defend your cheating girlfriend?"
"Nobody cheated. This is manipulation. And you know it."
Miguel arrives. Tries pulling Tory away. "This isn't worth it."
But Tory's beyond reason. Months of class resentment and personal anger focused into single point.
"After school. Parking lot. We settle this."
Sam's shaking. "I'm not fighting you."
"Then you're a coward on top of everything else."
Tory walks away. Leaving challenge hanging. The crowd murmuring. Excited. Bloodthirsty.
[CONFRONTATION: ISSUED]
[Public challenge cannot be ignored]
[Student body mobilizing]
I pull Sam aside. Private corner. Away from cameras.
"Don't go to the parking lot. Let me handle this."
"I'm tired of being protected. Of having everyone fight my battles." Her voice is firm. "If Tory wants to confront me, fine. But not in front of the school like spectacle."
She's right about dignity. Wrong about safety.
Robby joins us. "If this is happening, we need to control where and how. Not school property. Not public spectacle."
We try planning alternative. Off-campus location. Controlled environment. Just Sam and Tory with witnesses to ensure fairness.
But the plan falls apart immediately.
The announcement spreads through student body like wildfire. After school. Parking lot. Final showdown.
Every attempt to redirect fails. The mob has decided.
[SYSTEM ALERT:]
[CRITICAL EVENT INITIATED]
[School Fight: 95% Probability]
[Casualties: Unknown]
[Your Intervention: REQUIRED]
Final class periods are torture. Can't focus on anything except the approaching disaster.
I strategize with Miguel and Robby separately. Both agree this is disaster. Both disagree on approach.
Miguel wants Cobra Kai showing force. "We protect our own."
Robby wants Miyagi-Do de-escalating. "Violence creates more violence."
I want preventing tragedy. "People are going to get seriously hurt."
Can't unify strategy before final bell rings.
And then hundreds of students pour toward parking lot.
Where Tory and Sam will fight. And the entire semester's tensions will explode.
I position myself centrally. Scanning the crowd. Looking for threats. Preparing for chaos.
My phone buzzes. Sam: "I'm scared."
"Stay near me. I'll protect you."
"I know you will. That's what scares me. You'll get hurt trying to save everyone."
"Better me than you. Better me than anyone."
The crowd forms circle. Phones recording. Teachers still inside. Security overwhelmed.
This is student-governed space. Mob rules.
And I'm the only one who knows how bad this can get.
[STRESS: 95/100 (CRITICAL)]
[COMBAT RATING: 62/100 (Will be tested)]
[GOAL: Minimize casualties. Prevent deaths.]
[OUTCOME: Unknown]
Tory enters the circle. Spiked bracelet glinting in afternoon sun.
Sam steps forward. Miyagi-Do defensive stance. Trying to look brave.
And I move to intercept. Knowing this is the moment everything changes.
