CHAPTER 38: THE KREESE RETURN
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
Mid-January. Johnny receives certified letter. His face goes pale reading it.
"Emergency meeting. Tonight. Dojo."
The remaining loyal students gather. Me, Miguel, Aisha, three others who didn't scatter after the school fight.
Seven people. Down from forty at our peak.
Johnny holds the letter like it burns. "Kreese is taking the dojo. Legally. He's got paperwork from the original founding. Co-ownership documentation I didn't know existed."
"That's impossible," Miguel says. "You rebuilt this place from nothing."
"From Kreese's nothing. Apparently." Johnny's voice is hollow. "He's been patient. Waiting until I was vulnerable. Now with enrollment collapsed, I'm three months behind on rent. He's exercising his ownership claim. By end of month, Cobra Kai is his."
The devastation is complete. Johnny rebuilt something meaningful. And it's being stripped away by the man who corrupted it originally.
"There has to be a way to fight this," I say. "Legally. Amanda's lawyer—"
"Already consulted him. Unless I can pay off the debt or prove fraud in the original documentation, Kreese wins." Johnny sits heavily. "I'm trapped by paperwork and poverty."
"Just like the show. Kreese always wins this round. Takes the dojo. Forces Johnny to start over."
But this time, maybe we can make the loss into opportunity.
[CRISIS POINT: KREESE TAKEOVER IMMINENT]

[Legal options: Exhausted]
[Timeline: 2 weeks until transfer]
Three days later, Kreese finds me outside school. Casual. Friendly. Predatory.
"Walk with me, Ivyn."
Not a request.
We walk. He doesn't speak immediately. Strategic silence creating pressure.
Finally: "Stay with Cobra Kai. Under my leadership."
"No."
"You haven't heard the offer yet." His smile is calculated. "Assistant instructor. Better pay than Johnny could manage. Advanced techniques he doesn't know. You're talented. Why go down with his ship?"
The offer is seductive. Especially given my financial struggles. Fifteen dollars an hour assistant instructor versus minimum wage tutoring.
But I see the trap.
"Legitimizing your takeover by staying. Betraying everything I fought for during the dojo war." I stop walking. Face him. "I'd rather be broke and principled than paid and corrupted."
"Your loyalty is admirable and stupid." His expression hardens. "When this falls apart—and it will—remember I offered you a place."
"I'll remember you tried to buy me. And failed."
He walks away. Leaving poison in his wake.
I report the conversation to Johnny immediately. Phone call from school parking lot.
"Kreese tried recruiting me. Offered assistant instructor position and money."
Johnny's quiet for moment. "What'd you say?"
"That I'd rather be broke."
His laugh is bitter. Appreciative. "Classic Kreese. Divide and conquer. Thanks for standing by me."
"Always."
[KREESE RECRUITMENT: FAILED]
[Loyalty: Proven]
[JOHNNY LAWRENCE: Trust deepened]
Daniel makes unexpected proposal during Sunday afternoon training at his house.
Johnny's there. Uncomfortable. Here because I asked him to come. To listen.
"I'm opening Miyagi-Do officially. Proper dojo. Not just backyard training." Daniel pauses. Measures words. "Johnny, you should join me. Co-instructor. Combine our styles. Our philosophies. Create something neither of us could build alone."
Johnny's pride bristles immediately. "I'm not your charity case, LaRusso."
"You're not." Daniel's response is firm. "You're a skilled instructor whose students are loyal because you gave them something real. I'm offering partnership. Not pity."
"Why would I work with you? We've hated each other for forty years."
"Because separately, we're both vulnerable to Kreese. Together, we could actually counter him instead of fighting each other while he wins." Daniel leans forward. "Your students respect you. Mine respect me. Combined, we'd have something powerful. Something balanced."
The proposal hangs in air. Revolutionary concept requiring Johnny to surrender ego and Daniel to surrender resentment.
Robby speaks up. "It makes sense, Dad. You're both good teachers. You're just good at different things."
I add my voice. "Cobra Kai taught me aggression and confidence. Miyagi-Do taught me defense and balance. I'm better for having both. Why can't the dojos be better for combining?"
Johnny's jaw works. Processing. Struggling.
"And what would we call this combined thing? Cobra-Do? Miyagi-Kai?"
Daniel laughs. Actually laughs. "We'll figure out the name. First question is whether you're willing."
"I need time. To think."
"You have two weeks before Kreese takes Cobra Kai. After that, your students scatter or join him." Daniel's voice is gentle but firm. "I'm offering you an alternative. Take the time you need. But don't take too long."
After Johnny leaves, I stay.
"Think he'll accept?" Daniel asks.
"His pride is wounded. His dojo is being taken. Everything he built is being destroyed." I pause. "But he's smarter than he used to be. He'll see this is the only path forward."
"And if he doesn't?"
"Then I train at Miyagi-Do officially and keep checking on him until he changes his mind."
Daniel nods. Respect clear. "You're a good friend to him. He's lucky to have you."
"He saved me first. Before I even knew I needed saving. This is just returning the favor."

Kreese's name on the lease. His flag flying. Students who embraced his philosophy returning to train under "real" Cobra Kai.
Hawk among them. Walking through those doors with mohawk and attitude. Choosing Kreese over Johnny.
The betrayal is visible in Johnny's face. But he says nothing. Just watches from across the street.
I stand beside him. Miguel on his other side. Robby joining us minutes later.
"This doesn't define you," I say. "You're not the dojo. You're the teacher. The students who matter are right here."
Johnny's quiet for long moment. Then: "LaRusso's offer. I'm accepting it."
Relief floods through me. "Yeah?"
"Yeah." He takes a breath. "I've spent forty years fighting him. Maybe it's time to build something together instead."
Miguel grins. "This is going to be amazing. Or a complete disaster."
"Probably both," Robby adds.
We walk away from the dojo. From the Cobra Kai name. From everything Johnny built.
But watching him, I don't see defeat.
I see transformation.
Maybe losing the dojo is liberation. Freedom to build something better. Something that combines the best of both worlds without the weight of old grudges.
The Valley's karate landscape is reshaping. And this time, maybe the good guys can actually win.

And for the first time since dying in a crosswalk and waking up in this world, I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.
Doing exactly what I'm supposed to do.
Not preventing tragedy because I know it's coming.
But living fully. Fighting for what matters. Protecting people I care about.
The future is unwritten. And that's exactly how it should be.
