Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 : "The Guest Who Stayed"

The news spread through the Thorne mansion faster than Caleb expected.

Evan Arden was staying.

Not for a single evening.

Not for a short visit.

But temporarily.

By the next morning, every servant in the estate seemed to know.

Caleb only learned the details when a maid mentioned it while placing tea on the small table beside the library window.

"Alpha Thorne personally prepared the west guest suite for Lord Evan," she said politely.

Caleb paused in the middle of turning a page.

"The west suite?"

The maid nodded.

"Yes, sir. The grand one."

Of course it was.

The west suite was the largest guest room in the entire mansion. Caleb had passed it once while exploring the corridors during his first week in the house. The room overlooked the private gardens and had a balcony large enough to host a gathering.

Lucian didn't give that suite to just anyone.

Caleb closed the book slowly.

"I see."

The maid gave a small bow and left.

The library fell quiet again.

Caleb stared at the page in front of him but couldn't focus on the words.

Evan had arrived unexpectedly.

Apologized.

And within a single evening he had somehow secured the most luxurious guest suite in the mansion.

Lucian had accepted him easily.

Too easily.

Caleb exhaled slowly.

Maybe he was overthinking things.

Maybe Evan genuinely wanted to repair the alliance.

Maybe this was simply how political families behaved.

Still…

Something about the way Evan had looked at him during dinner lingered in Caleb's mind.

That small smile.

That quiet, victorious look.

Caleb shut the book.

He had a feeling the peaceful routine he'd managed to build inside the mansion was about to change.

Breakfast confirmed it.

The dining hall was already active when Caleb arrived.

Morning sunlight filtered through tall windows, casting pale gold across the long table. Servants moved quickly between chairs placing plates, pouring coffee, and arranging fresh fruit.

Lucian was seated at the head of the table.

Evan sat beside him.

Caleb stopped for a moment near the entrance.

Because the chair Evan occupied—

Was Caleb's seat.

For weeks now, Caleb had always sat there during breakfast. It had simply become the unspoken arrangement. Not close enough to suggest intimacy with Lucian, but near enough that conversation could happen if needed.

Today, Evan sat there comfortably, sipping coffee.

Lucian was speaking to him.

"…the trade deal will move forward by the end of the month."

Evan nodded thoughtfully.

"That's faster than I expected."

Lucian leaned back slightly.

"I dislike delays."

Caleb stepped forward quietly.

Neither of them noticed him immediately.

Or perhaps they did and simply chose not to react.

Caleb pulled out a chair near the far end of the table.

The sound of the chair sliding across marble was soft but noticeable.

Lucian glanced up briefly.

His gaze moved across the table.

Then he returned to his conversation.

No objection.

No acknowledgment.

Nothing.

Evan noticed.

Of course he did.

His eyes flicked toward Caleb for a moment.

Just long enough.

Then he casually continued speaking.

"I heard your security division has expanded recently."

Lucian nodded.

"Necessary precaution."

The conversation carried on as if everything were perfectly normal.

Caleb poured himself coffee quietly.

A servant quickly approached to place breakfast in front of him, though the attention felt noticeably slower than what Evan was receiving.

Another servant refilled Evan's glass before he even asked.

Lucian himself passed a plate toward Evan.

"Try this," he said. "Our chef prepares it well."

Evan smiled.

"I'm starting to think I should visit more often."

Lucian chuckled faintly.

"You're welcome to."

Caleb stared down at his plate.

The food tasted like nothing.

By the time breakfast ended, Caleb felt more like a stranger in the mansion than he had during his first day.

Servants walked beside Evan offering assistance.

A guard was assigned to escort him through the estate grounds.

Lucian personally gave him a brief tour of the upper west wing.

Caleb watched it all from the library window.

It was strange.

He had expected Lucian to maintain distance with everyone.

The Alpha was known for being cold, controlled, and distant.

Yet with Evan—

Lucian was… comfortable.

Even amused.

Caleb couldn't decide if that bothered him more than the indifference.

Later that afternoon, Lucian left for a corporate meeting.

This time, Caleb was expected to attend.

The Thorne family's public presence demanded it.

Caleb dressed carefully.

A simple but elegant suit.

Neutral colors.

Nothing that would draw unnecessary attention.

When he arrived at the car, Lucian was already inside.

Evan stood beside the vehicle speaking with one of the guards.

Lucian noticed Caleb approaching.

"Get in."

His voice was neutral.

Caleb entered the car quietly.

Evan didn't join them.

Instead, he leaned slightly toward the open window.

"Good luck with the meeting," he said.

Lucian smirked faintly.

"Luck isn't necessary."

The car door closed.

As the vehicle pulled away from the estate gates, Caleb glanced back through the window.

Evan stood there watching them leave.

His expression unreadable.

The corporate meeting was held inside one of the Thorne family's office towers.

The building itself reflected Lucian's influence—sleek, powerful, and intimidating.

Executives and partners moved through the halls quickly.

When Lucian entered the conference room, the entire atmosphere shifted.

Everyone stood.

Conversations stopped.

Respect—and fear—filled the space.

Caleb took a seat beside Lucian as usual.

Several business leaders began presenting reports.

Trade routes.

Security investments.

Regional influence.

The discussions were intense but controlled.

Lucian listened with sharp attention, occasionally asking precise questions that forced executives to rethink entire proposals.

Caleb remained mostly silent.

Observing.

Learning.

Until the conference room doors opened again.

A familiar figure walked inside.

Darius Vale.

He wore a perfectly tailored suit and an expression that carried its usual calm confidence.

"Apologies for the delay," Darius said smoothly.

Lucian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You weren't listed on the agenda."

Darius smiled.

"Consider this an unofficial visit."

He took a seat across the table.

But his gaze drifted almost immediately toward Caleb.

Just for a moment.

Then back to Lucian.

The meeting continued.

Yet something had changed.

Darius watched everything.

The way Lucian spoke.

The way others reacted.

And especially—

The distance between Lucian and Caleb.

Lucian rarely addressed him.

Rarely looked in his direction.

When someone mentioned the alliance marriage, Lucian simply acknowledged it with a brief nod before continuing the discussion.

Detached.

Uninterested.

Darius noticed.

Of course he did.

His eyes lingered thoughtfully on Caleb more than once during the meeting.

By the time the conference finally ended, most of the executives left quickly.

Lucian was immediately surrounded by several advisors discussing follow-up plans.

Caleb quietly gathered his notes.

He intended to leave the room without drawing attention.

But as he stepped into the hallway—

A voice spoke behind him.

"Caleb Arden."

Caleb turned.

Darius stood a few steps away.

His expression was polite.

But his eyes were sharp.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

Caleb shook his head slightly.

"No."

Darius approached slowly.

Up close, his presence felt calm yet unsettling.

He studied Caleb carefully.

Almost thoughtfully.

"I couldn't help noticing something during the meeting," Darius said.

Caleb remained silent.

Darius tilted his head slightly.

"The dynamic between you and Alpha Thorne."

Caleb stiffened.

"I don't think that concerns you."

Darius smiled faintly.

"Perhaps not."

There was a small pause.

Then his voice lowered slightly.

More serious.

"Still… I worry."

Caleb frowned.

"Why?"

Darius looked at him directly.

Not mocking.

Not manipulative.

Just… observing.

And then he asked quietly—

"Tell me…"

His voice softened just enough to feel unsettling.

"Are you safe in that house?"
