Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 : "Rumors"

Rumors spread quickly in high society.

Sometimes faster than truth.

Sometimes faster than danger.

And once a rumor found its footing, it rarely disappeared quietly.

Within a week of Evan Arden's arrival at the Thorne mansion, whispers had already begun weaving their way through the city's elite circles.

At first they were subtle.

Carefully phrased.

Quiet conversations over expensive wine.

But gradually, the whispers grew louder.

More confident.

More cruel.

Caleb first heard them by accident.

Late one afternoon, he was walking through the east corridor of the mansion on his way to the study.

The corridor connected several service areas, and servants often passed through while carrying trays or linens.

As Caleb approached the corner, he heard voices.

Two maids were standing near the linen cabinet.

They hadn't noticed him yet.

"…I'm just saying what everyone else is saying," one of them whispered.

"You shouldn't talk like that," the other replied nervously.

"But it's true!"

Caleb slowed his steps.

He wasn't trying to eavesdrop.

But the words reached him anyway.

"Did you see them yesterday?" the first maid continued.

"Alpha Thorne and Evan were together all afternoon."

"That's not unusual," the second maid said.

"But the way they were talking…"

A pause.

Then the first maid lowered her voice further.

"My cousin works in the Vale offices downtown. She said the whole city is talking about it."

"Talking about what?"

"That the Alpha seems closer to his former omega fiancé than his actual spouse."

Caleb stopped walking.

The words landed like cold water.

Former omega fiancé.

The second maid gasped quietly.

"You can't say that."

"I'm not saying it," the first maid insisted quickly. "Everyone else is."

She lowered her voice even further.

"They say Evan used to be promised to Alpha Thorne before the alliance marriage changed everything."

Caleb felt something tighten in his chest.

He had heard the story before.

Briefly.

Quietly.

Lucian and Evan had once been expected to marry.

Political negotiations had shifted.

The alliance with the Arden family had been rearranged.

And instead of Evan—

Caleb had been chosen.

At the time, Caleb had assumed it was just another political detail.

Something that didn't matter anymore.

But hearing the servants whisper about it now—

It felt different.

More personal.

More humiliating.

"Still," the second maid whispered nervously, "the Alpha married Caleb."

"Yes," the first maid said.

"But look at them."

Another pause.

"They barely speak."

Caleb stepped away from the corner quietly before they could notice him.

Their conversation faded behind him as he continued down the hallway.

But the words followed him.

Closer to his former omega fiancé than his actual spouse.

He kept walking.

His expression calm.

But inside, something felt strangely hollow.

Later that evening, the rumors seemed even more real.

Lucian and Evan were seated in the lounge discussing family business again.

Caleb passed through the room briefly while heading toward the library.

Neither of them stopped their conversation.

"…the council meeting next month will be important," Evan was saying.

Lucian nodded.

"I'll need reliable allies."

"You have them."

Lucian gave a faint smile.

"Perhaps."

Caleb walked past without interrupting.

Behind him, their voices continued.

Comfortable.

Familiar.

Like two people who understood each other well.

Caleb didn't turn back.

Across the city, another man was thinking about Caleb Arden as well.

But for very different reasons.

Darius Vale sat in a quiet office near the edge of the industrial district.

The building itself looked abandoned from the outside, but inside it served as one of the Vale family's smaller operational headquarters.

A dim desk lamp illuminated the files spread across the table.

Photographs.

Police reports.

Street surveillance images.

Darius leaned back in his chair, studying the evidence with a thoughtful expression.

Across from him stood one of his investigators.

"You're certain about this?" Darius asked.

"Yes, sir."

The investigator pointed to one of the photographs.

"These men were involved in the street attack last month."

Darius glanced at the image.

Three men.

Rough looking.

Common street criminals.

The kind hired for quick violence.

"They were arrested two weeks ago for another incident," the investigator continued.

"Petty theft."

Darius raised an eyebrow.

"And?"

"We questioned them."

The investigator slid another document across the desk.

"At first they claimed the attack was random."

Darius picked up the paper.

"But it wasn't."

"No."

The investigator hesitated.

"Eventually one of them admitted they were hired."

Darius's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Hired by who?"

"That's the strange part."

The investigator shook his head.

"They claim they never saw the client."

"Anonymous payment?"

"Yes."

Darius tapped the paper lightly against the desk.

"How much?"

"Enough to make them forget their common sense."

Darius leaned back slowly.

So the attack hadn't been random.

That confirmed his suspicion.

But something else bothered him.

"Did they know who the target was?"

The investigator nodded.

"Yes."

Darius looked up.

"And?"

"They were specifically told to target Caleb Arden."

The room fell silent.

Darius stared at the file for a long moment.

Street criminals.

Anonymous payment.

A direct target.

This hadn't been a robbery.

It had been planned.

Carefully.

Someone had wanted Caleb attacked.

Possibly worse.

Darius slowly stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights flickered in the distance.

He spoke quietly.

Almost to himself.

"So it wasn't coincidence."

The investigator remained silent.

Darius looked down at the photograph again.

Three criminals who had nearly beaten Caleb unconscious in the street.

Not random.

Not spontaneous.

Someone had arranged it.

Someone with money.

Someone with reason.

Darius placed the photograph back on the desk.

His voice dropped to a low murmur.

"Interesting."

The investigator waited.

Then Darius spoke the thought aloud.

A quiet realization.

"Someone wanted Caleb Arden dead."
