Even after all this time, it was still a dreary and cold place. People didn't gather to talk to each other like they were family. His alpha father didn't like 'unnecessary' conversation, so they didn't even talk at the dining table. Normal conversation between a child and a parent, even the barest one, like test scores, only happened in his father's personal office.
Perhaps so he could immediately punish his children if the result wasn't satisfactory.
Aside from that dreadful office, Eugene's father only talked to him while 'training' him to be a proper 'alpha', and then stopped talking to him at all after he manifested as an omega. His brothers still talked to him sometimes, but 'talking' was an overstatement. Bullying was more apt.
