Chapter 23
The dark blue mist swirled around them, thick and heavy, almost suffocating. Yusikuna and Musukoni landed in a shadowy corner of the realm. The air was cold, tinged with an otherworldly glow, and the mist distorted everything beyond a few feet.
Yusikuna readied his bow, nocking three blazing fire arrows. Sparks flickered against the eerie mist, casting fleeting shadows across the ground.
Musukoni closed his eyes, twin daggers connected by a chain held firmly in his hands. His stance was calm, calculated, prepared for whatever was coming.
"Something's coming," Musukoni murmured, sensing the faint disturbances in the air.
"Let's see who it is!" Yusikuna said energetically, trying to mask the tension with his usual bravado.
Two figures emerged from the fog—and immediately, recognition struck. Their alternates. Clones, exact replicas of themselves.
"They're clones… designed to break us mentally," Musukoni said, his voice cold and steady.
The clone of Musukoni lunged first. Daggers clashed in a shower of sparks, a dazzling display of precision and speed. Each strike echoed through the mist, blending with the firelight of Yusikuna's arrows.
On the other side, Yusikuna fought his clone. Arrows blazed through the air, igniting the mist, but the dense fog diffused the flames. Sparks and fire danced wildly, painting the battle in chaotic flashes of light.
The fight dragged on, brutal and unyielding. Both Yusikuna and Musukoni were pushed to the edge of exhaustion.
"Musukoni! We can't win at this rate!" Yusikuna shouted through gritted teeth, releasing another volley of fire arrows.
"Yes… fighting our own clones will never end," Musukoni agreed, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. "We need to switch—fight each other's clones. Together, we have a chance."
With precise coordination, Musukoni and Yusikuna swapped targets. Musukoni engaged Yusikuna's clone, while Yusikuna took on Musukoni's. Their attacks synchronized perfectly, fiery arrows and slashing daggers creating a symphony of destruction in the mist.
After a grueling fight, both warriors collapsed. Fatal injuries marked their bodies. Musukoni, despite his intelligence and skill, lacked the durability to withstand such punishment. He slumped unconscious, daggers slipping from his grasp.
Yusikuna stood alone, every movement labored. His body screamed in pain—broken ribs, internal bleeding—but his eyes burned with unyielding determination.
"Give up, Yusikuna. You're done," Musukoni's clone warned, voice filled with cold certainty.
But Yusikuna shook his head, rising slowly. "I won't stop… not until I protect Musukoni. He's like my little brother… I'll die for him if I must."
With a burst of energy, he launched into the air, spinning violently, releasing ten blazing arrows in a perfect circle. The fire illuminated the mist, the blue haze dispersing as a cold, blue moon appeared above—a perfect moon shot.
The clones faltered. One by one, they fell under the precision of his final assault.
Yusikuna collapsed to his knees, smiling faintly. Musukoni stirred, eyes blinking open, analyzing the aftermath. He knelt beside his friend, tears welling uncontrollably.
"I failed… I'm useless," Musukoni whispered, grief lacing his words.
Yusikuna reached up, patting his head with a faint smile. Memories flashed through his mind—a life abandoned by his parents, a lonely boy standing at a fast-food stall, asking quietly for food and being kicked away.
Then a woman adopted him, only to be gunned down by robbers in the streets. Later, Shioinkin found him, trained him, shaped him into the fighter he had become.
Back in the present, Yusikuna turned to Musukoni, voice trembling but firm.
"Promise me something," he said softly.
Musukoni's tears streamed freely. "Anything."
"Promise me you will survive… live. Protect Jin Yuan, Yuzurei, and this world. And live happily."
"I promise," Musukoni whispered, choking back sobs.
Yusikuna smiled faintly, the light of the blue moon reflecting in his bloodied eyes. And then, his chest fell forward, breath fading… life slipping away.
He died with a smile.
