Chapter 7 - “Ash keeps the shape of hands that once held fire.”

The drums do not beat today.

That alone tells the village something is wrong.

Gamiwe kneels at the edge of the ash ring, fingers dusted white, tracing symbols that are older than grief. Each line is deliberate. Each pause is a breath held too long. She does not cry. Crying is for when the living still expect answers.

Behind her, T'LARU stands with his arms crossed, jaw tight, eyes fixed on the horizon like it owes him money.

T'LARU:"He should be here."

Gamiwe does not look back.

GAMIWE:"He is where he needs to be."

That answer irritates him. It's supposed to.

A child stumbles near the ash ring. Gamiwe lifts a hand—no words—and the child stops cold, not frozen, just understood. The old magic. The kind that doesn't glow or shout. The kind that listens first.

T'LARU exhales through his nose.

T'LARU:"You let Sefu turn mourning into mockery."

That finally gets her attention.

She stands slowly. The air tightens. Not threatening—deciding.

GAMIWE:"I let him survive it."

Silence stretches. Somewhere far away, stone cracks from the heat of the day cooling.

CUT — ELSEWHERE IN THE VILLAGE

Two elders argue in whispers. A shrine flickers. Someone has replaced an offering incorrectly.

T'LARU sees all of it.

Leadership is not a crown here. It's a weight that notices everything.

T'LARU (low):"While you were gone, he broke three rites. Laughed during one. Smiled during another."

GAMIWE:"He smiles when he is afraid."

That lands heavier than a slap.

She steps past him, toward the old wall—the one etched with names no one reads aloud anymore.

GAMIWE:"And you scold him because you see yourself."

T'LARU stiffens.

FLASHBACK — SHORT, SHARP

A younger T'LARU. Same posture. Same stubborn jaw. Laughing too loud during a burial. A hand—older, sterner—grabbing his shoulder.

ELDER (V.O.):"Grief doesn't make room for noise. Learn that, or it will learn you."

Back to now.

T'LARU looks away.

T'LARU:"He will get himself killed."

GAMIWE:"No."

She presses her palm to the wall. The names warm under her skin.

GAMIWE:"He will get himself ready."

MEANWHILE — EDGE OF THE FARMS

Sefu runs. Falls. Runs again. Bruised. Laughing under his breath at nothing.

Someone unseen watches.

Not judging. Measuring.

BACK TO GAMIWE & T'LARU

Smoke rises. Not from fire—from memory.

T'LARU:"And Kura?"

Gamiwe's hand stills.

GAMIWE:"She walks riddles meant to cut her feet and sharpen her mind."

T'LARU:"That's cruel."

Gamiwe finally smiles. Soft. Dangerous.

GAMIWE:"So is truth, when it's late."

She turns to him fully now.

GAMIWE:"You guard the village. I guard what comes after it."

The drums begin again. Slow. Measured. Not mourning—continuance.

FINAL IMAGE

T'LARU stands taller as people gather. Gamiwe fades back into the crowd like a secret that trusts time. Far away, Sefu collapses into the dirt, grinning through blood.

Three paths. One story. None abandoned.

And the title finally makes sense—Because Ash doesn't forget heat.It remembers who carried it.
