The sky was filled with complete blackness as the stars glittered all over.
With the quarter moon lighting up night sky.
As I crawled on the ground and nearing the barbwires.
My rifle strapped behind my back as I carried multiple metal rod like object wrapped around my arms.
I could feel the textures of the earth on my hands as I crawled my way through.
With my knees and shin scrapping on the rough and rocky terrain.
And being soaked in brown liquid.
I could barely see through the darkness despite the half moon brightening our surroundings.
But I was barely able distinguish the large line of barbwires and traps set up.
Ruined.
Looking back, I saw my squadron crawling like spiders.
Also carrying their own equipment as we were sent here to fix traps and wires.
Paul and Tobias both held together a roll of barbed wire.
Amelia was with Wesley and Otto.
Mara, Lena and Hermann were together.
And Gideon was following right behind Fischer.
Until they all finally reached our designated location.
Fish led ahead, getting in front of us and crouched to make herself look clearer.
"Alright guys, you know what to do right? Come here, Lukas." Fish whispered.
I followed her command and came to her.
She then proceeded to grab one of the metal rods I had wrapped around my arms.
Those metal rod like objects were actually an corkscrew barbed wire support.
Which you had to bury it deep underground and letting the top half straight.
Then you use the barbwires by fitting them through a hole that was made on the top half of the support.
Like fitting a thread through the eye of a sewing needle and getting it on the other side.
Which then you could pull from and proceeding to do the same process again.
Until it extends all throughout the line.
Fish soon planted the corkscrew barbed wire support.
And did the exact some procedure as I thought.
I looked over at Tobias and Paul and I slightly waved my hand to get their attention.
"Follow me guys." I whispered.
They noticed me quickly went over.
"Yo, what is it?" Paul asked.
"Being so close to each other is probably dangerous so we have to spread out okay? Let's plant these wires somewhere else." I replied.
They both nodded in response and I went off into another direction with them following right behind me.
***
Paul and Tobias got their own share of corkscrew and dispersed from each other.
I buried my own corkscrew to the soil.
Planting it as deep as possible so it doesn't fall off.
Once I'm finished I reached over the roll of barb wires.
Pulling it like pulling a string from the thread roll.
Though the difference is that I'm using real dangerous stuff here where I could potentially cut myself.
The cold metallic wire extended further and further as I pulled from them.
Despite my carefulness, the points stabbed my hands.
Though it wasn't really bad as I was trying to be careful but the fact that I'll have to do this for long a period was the problem as the constant damage will surely injure my hands.
I then fitted the wires in between the holes in the screw picket.
And pulled the wire on the other side which then I gave it to Paul.
And Paul would the same with his screw picket and give the wires to Tobias.
And I'll have to do this work for the next hole.
Yet again, I pulled on another wire which I had to circulate.
"Ow."
Pulling my hands back, I saw the points pierced my fingers and small amounts of blood started to come out.
I placed the finger on my mouth and sucked the blood.
"Yo, you okay?" Paul whispered.
I turned around and lightly nodded.
He nodded back and gave me a thumbs up.
"Let's just finished this quick and go b-"
BANG
The sound pierced my ears like thunder.
I jolted from the sudden noise that cut through the silence.
I covered my head as I heard a loud thud.
Not an explosion, nor shell.
But something more heavy and dense.
Looking back up, I saw something familiar.
"P-Paul?"
It almost didn't sound like mine.
Raising my head a bit up.
Paul was lying on the ground.
Motionless.
My heart punched through my chest and my lungs fastened up.
My hands shook.
My mind flew in a frenzy as I tried to comprehend what just happened.
BANG
Suddenly the night dark sky lit up in a bright white flash.
My head slowly turned to look up.
To see a flare was shot up.
That lightened up the entire land.
And exposed us.
"Lukas!"
Tobias dashed towards me and pinned me down to the ground.
A hale of gunfire shot at our location.
As both me and Tobias laid on the ground, covered by the small patches of dirt.
My hearing was engulfed in a deafening sounds of fire.
Raising into my mind and consumed by the never ending explosions.
I huffed Tobias tightly.
My fingers deeply embedding into his back like a claw.
My eyes were closed and hoped to the lords this would stop.
But suddenly it did.
The constant firing from the machine guns stopped.
And the flare that was shot up faded away.
Like a light slowly loosing its luster and fading away.
Consumed by the darkness.
I let go of my arms that wrapped around Tobias.
He slowly raised his head to look before quickly getting up.
Grabbing my arms and pulling me.
I jolted from the sudden and violently act but I followed his movement.
But my eyes was still locked behind Paul.
Who still lied on the ground.
Just... peacefully sleeping...
I quickly shook my head and ran towards my trench.
The other squadrons did the same.
Running back to their safety just like me.
Whistle.
The air was filled with some kind of whistle.
Getting louder as we ran.
BOOM
A shell landed and explosed.
Releasing shrapnels everywhere.
And then another whistle.
BOOM
And then another.
BOOM
And another.
BOOM
It was non other than an artillery barrage specifically used to target us.
I leaped forward and was able to enter the safety of the trenches with Tobias following behind.
I fell down on the floor of the trench.
The mud and dirt splashed all over my clothes.
I quickly stood up and looked up from the safety of the trenches.
"What the hell are you doing!? Get down!"
One of the soldiers shouted but I ignored his call as I watched over my friends.
Hermann, Mara and Lena was first to return safely.
Then Tomas, Wesley and Otto.
Only Gideon and Fish lacked behind.
"Oh, please lord."
I prayed to myself as I saw Fish and Gideon ran.
BOOM
Suddenly a brief cloud of dirt covered them.
I my breath hitched at the sight.
No...
No no no no no no no
I repeatedly shook my head.
I held my pendants in hands and prayed when suddenly I was violently pulled back.
I fell on the ground, landing on my ass.
"Are you fucking crazy! You could have been shot!" A soldier shouted.
"How the fuck does that matter to y-"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
A scream filled the air.
As the world felt like it stopped...
