Splash! Splash! Splash!
With each step, my foot landed on the muddy ground.
With each step, my foot was buried under the earth.
With each step, my foot was being swept in brown water.
With each step, my foot was being dragged down.
The walls that surrounded me were nearly pressing on both shoulders.
Made out of wooden and metal scrap mixed with the dirt.
Rotting away as if it was never attended for.
I took a deep breath.
My chest expanding but was compressed by the anticipation of what to come.
As I held my rifle closely.
As I was in the trenches.
"Sir, how long is it now when we reach the frontlines?" Mara asked out.
"Oh, we're almost there." Fish responded.
Suddenly we stopped our tracks.
I bumped behind Tomas who was in front of me.
"Why'd we stop?" I asked.
"Someone's passing by." Tomas replied.
Tilting my head to see.
I saw another squadron carrying supplies.
One was carrying an entire machine gun on his shoulder.
The size was nearly half of his body.
Looked more like MG 8 machine gun used by the Germans.
How do I know this?
Because I'm a big fat nerd who is interested in history.
Specifically ww1 and ww2.
And guns. I was a gun nut back in the day.
When I used to play multiple shooter games. Especially PUBG which explains my obsessions with guns.
Memories flashed in my head where I played pubg with my friends.
Jumping off the plane and achieving.
Winner winner
Chicken dinner
My mouth drooled in saliva as I was filled with dopamine just thinking about it.
"Yo move it, Lukas!" Paul said behind me.
Snapping back to reality, I saw the people in front of me has already moved.
Quickly I followed right behind.
As I went through.
I went passed by soldiers just like me.
Just passing through.
And just like fish said.
we were close to the frontline.
As we finally reached our destination.
The area was now more spacious.
With the communication trench finally leading us into the frontline trench.
The walls went both ways rather than forward as I was going.
And a bunch of more soldiers.
As I saw them under in some kind of small dugout.
Where they could barely just fit in by crouching.
And these small dugouts were spread across the entire line.
With wooden planks and sandbags on top of them.
And the ones that weren't were resting against the walls and the small makeshift seats they've made.
Which were just a small pile of dirt.
Talking, smoking and playing cards.
I mean what else was there to do?
Examining the walls.
Just like through the communication trenches.
They were as well a mix of wooden and metal scraps.
Barely arranged together but still holding on for dear life.
Telephone lines were attached on the walls that propagated through the entire trench lines.
Beside me was a large wooden sign held up.
That says.
"The Drunard valley... How familiar." I said to myself.
If I had to guess, it could mean that this whole trench line was made out of soldiers coming from Drunard.
I smiled at myself seeing this.
